FinnU Baseball Swept at Stevens Point – Wednesday Sports Wrap

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team fell 5-0 and 11-0 at 25th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point yesterday. The Lions were held to just one hit in each game.

The Lions softball team’s games scheduled at Lawrence University this afternoon have been postponed. The games scheduled for tomorrow have been moved to the Mel Nicks Sports Complex in De Pere.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has introduced a new recruit. Garrett McBee will join the squad from Lake Wales, Florida.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Boston Bruins tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons entertain the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow.

MLB

18-year-old prospect Roberto Campos hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, as the Detroit Tigers got past the Toronto Blue Jays 4-2 yesterday. Tarik Skubal tossed five shutout innings, and struck out eight. Willi Castro also homered.

The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon. Matt Manning will start.

With centerfielders Riley Greene and Derek Hill set to open the season on the disabled list, the Tigers have obtained outfielder Austin Meadows from the Tampa Bay Rays. Meadows was an all star in 2019, when he hit 33 home runs. He missed most of the 2020 season with an oblique injury, and has struggled to return to form. In exchange, the Rays get infielder Isaac Parades, and a compensatory pick between the second and third rounds of this summer’s draft.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Colorado Rockies 8-7 last night. Starter Freddy Peralta struggled, giving up five runs on six hits before leaving in the fifth inning. Omar Narváez homered.

The Brewers play their final preseason game against the Kansas City Royals today. Adrian Houser will start.

NCAA Basketball

Kansas pulled off the biggest comeback in the history of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game last night, and defeated North Carolina 72-69 to take the title. The Jayhawks trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, and were down by 15 at halftime. An early second-half surge brought them back into the game. The Tar Heels had a chance to force overtime, but Caleb Love’s off-balance three-point attempt missed the mark.
