Tech Hockey Sweeps St. Lawrence – Sunday Sports Wrap

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team was no match for top-ranked Grand Valley State Saturday, falling 42-7 at Kearly Stadium. Ethan Champney’s four-yard touchdown catch brought the Huskies their only score.

Northern fell to seventh-rated Ferris State 56-20.

Finlandia dropped a 16-12 struggle to Westminster. Nahum Garent’s second touchdown pass of the afternoon gave the Lions a 12-8 lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Jays scored the winning touchdown four minutes later, to earn their first win of the season.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team turned in its second straight shutout Saturday night, blanking Saint Lawrence 3-0. Blake Pietila extended his all-time school shutout record to 13 games, and three different Huskies scored.

Northern Michigan defeated Alaska 3-2 to earn a weekend split.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 5-2 at Saint Catherine’s Saturday. The Wildcats outshot the Lions 53-15.

The Finlandia men’s team suffered an 8-1 loss to Bethel University Saturday. The Royals scored six goals in the first period, and outshot the Lions 43-13.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team edged Saginaw Valley State in five tight sets Saturday 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-9). Jillian Kuizenga had 15 kills, Carissa Beyer recorded 31 digs, and Lina Espejo-Ramirez racked up 56 assists – one shy of the school record.

College Basketball

The Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated Lake Superior State 70-57 in an exhibition match Saturday. Former Baraga standout Martina Jahfetson led the Lions with 20 points.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers routed the Marquette Mutineers 9-0 Saturday night.

NHL

Lucas Raymond scored twice, as the Red Wings edged the Wild 2-1 Saturday night. Ville Husso stopped 30 shots.

The Wings visit the Sabres tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 6:45 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons host the Warriors today.

MLB

The Astros defeated the Phillies 5-2 Saturday, and evened the World Series at one win per team. Game three will be played tomorrow in Philadelphia.
