MTU Opens NCAA Hockey Play
The Michigan Tech hockey team faces St. Cloud State in the opening round of the NCAA hockey tournament this afternoon. It’s the first appearance for the Huskies in the tournament since 1981, when Mel Pearson was a player. Now, he’s the coach. Face-off is at 4:30 in Fargo. You can watch the game online on ESPN3. North Dakota mets Quinnipiac in the second regional semifinal tonight at 8:00. The regional final will be played tomorrow night at 9:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team plays at Calvin College today, and then plays two at Wisconsin-River Falls on Sunday.

The Finlandia baseball team plays two at Cardinal Stritch University tomorrow, and two more on Sunday.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team has added a new player for next season. Bark River-Harris High School forward Caitlyn Frazer averaged 18 points per game this season, and was awarded first team honors in the Skyline Conference and the Central Upper Peninsula Conference.

GLHL Tourney Opens Today
GLHL LogoThe Great Lakes Hockey League tournament opens today. The Portage Lake Pioneers will host this year’s event, with games scheduled at both Dee Stadium and the Houghton County Arena. Each team plays in two opening-round games. The Calumet Wolverines will face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs at 2:30 this afternoon. The Pioneers open against the Monroe Blues at 6:00. The Wolverines will take on the Mosinee Papermakers tonight at 8:30. The Pioneers meet the Fond du Lac Bears tomorrow morning at 11:00. The semifinals will take place tomorrow evening, and the championship game on Sunday. All of those games will be played at Dee Stadium. Several of the other opening round games will face off at the Houghton County Arena. We’ll broadcast all of the Wolverines’ and Pioneers’ games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

NHL – Red Wings Bitten by Sharks
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Sharks 6-4 last night. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on 10 shots in the first period, and was replaced by Petr Mrazek. The Wings host the Lightning tomorrow afternoon. Coach Mike Babcock says Mrazek will start in goal. Face-off is at 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Visit Magic
The Detroit Pistons play at Orlando tonight.

NFL – Nelson Recovering from Surgery
The Green Bay Packers have confirmed that receiver Jordy Nelson recently underwent hip surgery. Coach Mike McCarthy called it a “clean-up procedure,” and said Nelson should be at full strength well before the start of training camp.

MLB
Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez each hit their first home runs of the spring, as the Tigers defeated the Orioles 6-4 yesterday. David Price pitched into the seventh inning, and gave up three runs. The Tigers face the Blue Jays this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start.

Former Tigers’ pitcher Bill Slayback has died. Slayback caused a sensation as a rookie in 1972, when he debuted with three consecutive victories… each on three days rest. His career was derailed shortly thereafter by arm problems. He retired from baseball in 1976, and worked in the music industry as a singer, songwriter, and writer of commercial jingles. Bill Slayback was 67.

Kris Davis and Luis Jimenez each hit grand slams, as the Brewers pounded the Mariners 15-1 yesterday. Mike Fiers gave up one run over 3-2/3rds innings. The Brewers will play the Reds tonight. Matt Garza will start.
