Allen Passes 1,000 Mark in Chassell Girls Hoops Win – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey last night, Hancock’s game at Kingsford was postponed because of bad weather. They’re hoping to make that up tonight.

Also on the hockey schedule tonight…
– Houghton entertains Jeffers. Pregame coverage will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet welcomes Escanaba.

In girls basketball last night…
– Houghton defeated Hancock 46-37. Taylor Sebbas scored 18 for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet stopped Baraga 58-39.
– Jeffers got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 58-47
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City edged Republic-Michigamme 52-51.
– Chassell downed Ontonagon 57-43. The Panthers head into the tournament on a 19-game winning streak. Milly Allen scored 17 points, and passed the 1,000-point mark for her career.
– The L’Anse – West Iron County game was canceled because of bad weather. The game may not be able to be made up.

In boys action last night, Ewen-Trout Creek smothered Watersmeet 76-26. Jake Witt scored 24 for the Panthers, and Eli Nordine added 22.

In boys action tonight…
– Houghton entertains Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Hancock hosts Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
– Chassell visits at Baraga.
– L’Anse welcomes Ontonagon.
– Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Watersmeet.
– Calumet travels to West Iron County, to make up a game that was snowed out on January 11th.

A half-dozen members of the Houghton swim team have earned All-U.P. honors. Colton Haataja, Leif Odegard and Leo Wheeler have been named to the boys swim squad. Samantha Olson was placed on the girls team. Autumn Sanders and Andrew Garland were honored for diving.

MTU
Michigan Tech defenseman Mark Auk has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player of the Week. Auk blocked seven shots and collected three points, as the Huskies split their weekend series with Arizona State.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Nashville Predators tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have traded goaltender Petr Mrazek to the Philadelphia Flyers. In exchange, Detroit gets a fourth-round pick in the this year’s draft and a third-round selection next year. Those picks could be upgraded, depending on Mrazek’s performance. Mrazek’s contract expires at the end of this season. If the Flyers re-sign him, the Wings get an additional third-round pick in 2019. Former Northern Michigan University goalie Jared Coreau is expected to be called up to replace Mrazek. Coreau was just named the American Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Week for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons return from the NBA All-Star break Friday night, when they host the Boston Celtics. Tip-off will take place at 7:00 on 99.3 the Lift.

MLB
Former Detroit Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez has reportedly signed a huge deal with the Boston Red Sox. He’ll make 110-million dollars over five years.

Our Finlandia University athletics coverage continues this weekend at the American Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament. Our broadcast of the top-seeded Lions’ semifinal game against Pine Manor will begin at 7:40 Saturday evening.
