Baraga Girls Advance to Hoops Final – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

For the first time in school history, the Baraga girls basketball team will play for a state championship. 

The Vikings outscored Fowler 46-44 in the semifinals last evening, avenging a loss to the Eagles last year. 

Baraga will face Glen Lake in the championship game tomorrow morning at 10:00 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing. The Lakers eliminated Adrian Lenawee Christian in their semifinal game, 49-31. 

Youth Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association 10U AA Portage Lake Flyers begin pool play in the state tournament today in Port Huron. They’ll face the Traverse City North Stars at 3:45, then take on the Trenton Blades tomorrow morning at 8:30, and the KV Renegades tomorrow afternoon at 4:15.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech Hockey team has claimed the Central Collegiate Hockey Association’s top two individual honors.

Goaltender Blake Pietila has been named Player of the Year. Pietila leads the nation with 10 shutouts this season, and ranks second in victories, third in save percentage and fourth in goals-against average.

Joe Shawhan has been named the CCHA Coach of the Year. The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the league’s pre-season poll, but wound up in second place, just two points behind regular-season champion Minnesota State.

The CCHA championship game will be played tomorrow night, with Northern Michigan facing Minnesota State in Mankato.

The field for the NCAA tournament will be announced Sunday.

Adult Hockey

The Copper Country Old-Timers hockey tournament continues through the weekend. Play will continue through the weekend, with numerous age divisions for men, and a women’s division, as well. Games will be played at Dee Stadium, the Houghton County Arena, and the Colosseum.

The Red Wings host the Avalanche tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

College Basketball

Michigan State opens the NCAA men’s basketball tournament today, with a 12:15 game against USC.

The University of Michigan faces Vanderbilt in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament tomorrow at noon.

NBA

The Pistons lost to the Nuggets 119-100 last night. Rodney McGruder led Detroit with 20 points. Jalen Duren scored 15, and grabbed 13 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Heat Sunday night. Coverage begins at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers lost 10-1 to the Phillies yesterday. Spencer Turnbull gave up three runs on six hits over three innings.

The Tigers face the Yankees today. Matt Manning will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers fell to the Angels 3-2 yesterday. Eric Lauer pitched into the fourth inning, and gave up two runs. Luke Voit homered.

The Brewers face the Rangers this afternoon. Janson Junk will start for Milwaukee.
