Baraga Girls Comeback Falls Short in State Hoops Semifinal – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Baraga High School girls basketball team ended its season with a tough 51-45 loss to defending state champion Fowler in the Division Four state semifinals yesterday. Baraga fell behind early, and trailed 17-4 at the end of the first quarter. The Vikings didn’t quit, though, and slowly narrowed the gap until they trailed by just one point with 54 seconds remaining. The Eagles sank some free throws down the stretch to pull out the win. Reide Osterman led Baraga with 17 points and nine rebounds. Makenna Hendrickson scored eight points, and grabbed eight rebounds. The Vikings conclude one of the best seasons in school history with a record of 23-2. Fowler will face Plymouth Christian in the championship match tomorrow morning.

Ypsilanti Arbor Prep will take on Kent City in the Division Three championship game tomorrow afternoon. The Division Two and Division One semifinals will be played today.

The Ewen-Trout Creek boys Division Four state quarterfinal game against Rudyard Tuesday will be played at Munising High School at 7:00.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings broke their six-game losing streak with a 1-0 victory over the Vancouver Canucks last night. Pius Suter scored the game’s only goal in the second period. Alex Nedelkjovic made 43 saves to earn the shutout.

The Wings call on the Seattle Kraken tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons snapped their four-game losing streak with a 134-120 win over the Orlando Magic last evening. Saddiq Bey exploded for 51 points, and tied a Pistons team record with 10 three-pointers. Detroit played without Cade Cunningham and Jerami Grant. Cunningham is ill, and Grant has a sore knee.

The Pistons visit the Cleveland Cavaliers tomorrow.

MLB

After a three-week delay caused by the contract dispute between Major League Baseball team owners and players, spring training games will finally get underway today…
• The Detroit Tigers will face the Philadelphia Phillies. Eduardo Rodriguez will start. We’ll broadcast the game at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
• The Milwaukee Brewers will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Former Tigers starter Matthew Boyd has signed a one-year free agent contract with the San Francisco Giants. Boyd’s 2021 season was cut short by flexor tendon surgery. He’s not expected to be able to pitch until June. Former Detroit and Milwaukee pitcher Daniel Norris has signed with the Chicago Cubs.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have signed a one-year deal with receiver D.J. Chark. He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars last year, but missed most of the season with a broken ankle. Detroit also agreed to terms with backup quarterback David Blough, and inked former New Orleans former Saints tight end Garrett Griffin to a one-year contract.

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

Adult Hockey

The Copper Country Oldtimers Tournament continues through Sunday, with games at the Calumet Colosseum, the Houghton County Arena, and Dee Stadium. See the schedule here.
