Baraga Girls Fall in State Hoops Final – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

The Baraga girls basketball team fell 60-43 to Glen Lake in the Division Four state championship game Saturday. The Vikings got off to a quick start, and built a nine-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lakers regrouped, trimmed the deficit to five at halftime, then outscored Baraga 38-16 in the second half. Cori Jahfetson scored 20 for the Vikings – 14 in the first quarter. Makenna Hendrickson added 14. Baraga closes the best tournament run in school history with a record of 23-6.

In Saturday’s other championship games…
• In Division Three, Hemlock defeated Blissfield 59-43.
• In Division Two, Lansing Catholic shut down Frankenmuth 43-29.
• In Division One, Rockford got past West Bloomfield 40-36.

High School Hockey

Houghton High School is well-represented on the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association Division Three All-State Team.

Forwards Camden Markham, Gab Carlson and Landon Stevens were all named to the first team, along with defenseman Connor Raffaelli. Calumet goaltender Aksel Loukus was also placed on the first team.

Gremlins goaltender Bryant Lee and Calumet defenseman Dan Loukus made the second team. Calumet forward Cam Anderson earned honorable mention votes.

Youth Hockey

The Copper Country Junior Hockey Association 10U AA Portage Lake Flyers wrapped up pool play in the state tournament Port Huron Saturday with a 5-1 victory over the Trenton Blades, and a 7-1 loss to the KV Renegades. The 2-1 record was good enough to advance the Flyers to the semifinals. They’ll face the Saginaw Jr. Spirit this morning at 9:30. The KV Renegades and Rochester Rattlers will meet in the other semifinal. The championship game will be played this afternoon at 2:45.

College Hockey

Northern Michigan couldn’t hold a 2-0 lead, and lost the Central Collegiate Hockey Association championship game 3-2 to Minnesota State Saturday night. The Mavericks scored twice with their goalie pulled in the final two minutes of regulation, and netted the game-winner 68 seconds into overtime.

The field for the NCAA tournament will be announced today.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Avalanche 5-1 Saturday afternoon. Pius Suter scored Detroit’s only goal. Ville Husso gave up all five goals over the first 45 minutes, and gave way to Magnus Hellberg.

The Wings entertain the Panthers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

College Basketball

Michigan State faces Marquette in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament this evening.

A second top-seed has been ousted from the tournament. In the West region, Arkansas upended Kansas 72-71 Saturday. The Jayhawks join Purdue on the sideline.

Tyrin Lawrence’s jump shot with 12 seconds remaining lifted Vanderbilt to a 66-65 victory over the University of Michigan in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament Saturday.

NBA

The Pistons host the Heat tonight. Coverage begins at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers dropped an 8-4 Grapefruit League game to the Cardinals Saturday. Starter Matthew Boyd gave up three runs over four innings. Spencer Torkelson homered.

The Tigers play the Nationals today. Eduardo Rodriguez will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers came from behind to edge the Rangers 4-3 in Cactus League play. Joey Wiemer and Skye Bolt homered for the Crew. Starter Jason Junk gave up a run on three hits over three innings.

The Brewers lost 11-6 to the Padres. Starter Bryse Wilson pitched into the fifth, and was charged with five runs. Jesse Winker had three hits.

The Brewers face the Reds this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start for Milwaukee.
