Bolt Boys Remain Unbeaten – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In the boys high school basketball last evening…
– Calumet defeated Gwinn 57-45.
– Hancock lost at Iron Mountain 87-29.
Carson Chynoweth and Vandan Jacques each scored 10 for the Bulldogs.
– Jeffers got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 55-44. Christian Hocking led the Jets with 26 points.
Caleb Gregoire had 15 for the Lakes.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City crushed Republic-Michigamme 72-33.
Ashton Janke scored 26, and Davin Hill added 20. The Blue Bolts remain unbeaten.
– Baraga fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 70-51.

– Ontonagon edged Chassell 58-55.

The regular high school hockey season wraps up today, when Jeffers skates at Escanaba.

The hockey playoffs open with the regional semifinals on Thursday, and we’ll bring you all the games from our local teams on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team has the weekend off.

The Northern Michigan University hockey squad lost 6-1 at Lake Superior State University last night. The Battle for the Cappo Cup wraps up tonight.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams entertain Grand Valley State University today. The women’s contest starts at 1:00, and the men’s at 3:00.

Both Northern Michigan University teams host Davenport University today.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 4-2 at Trine University last night. Kait Ryynanen and Payton Airaudi scored for the Lions. Annah Smiddy stopped 55 shots. The Lions conclude their season at Trine today.

GLHL

Matt Yeo had a hat trick, as the Calumet Wolverines buried the Marquette Mutineers 12-4 last night. The Wolverines host the Portage Lake Pioneers this evening at 7:30. To support Hockey Week in Calumet, kids will be admitted free, and are asked to wear their youth hockey jerseys.

Exhibition Hockey

The Battle of the Bridge hockey game between the Michigan U.P. Veterans Hockey Club and the Saginaw Spirit Warriors will be played tonight at 7:00 at Dee Stadium. Both teams are made up of veterans. $5.00 tickets will be available at the door. Money raised will support the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the New York Islanders last night. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s lone goal. The loss officially eliminated the Wings from the playoffs, with more than month still remaining in the regular season. It is the earliest playoff elimination in the NHL since 1996.

Detroit hosts the Calgary Flames tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have claimed defenseman Cody Goloubef off waivers. Goloubef played 24 games with the Ottawa Senators this season.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons visit the Portland Trail Blazers tomorrow.

The Pistons continued their rebuild yesterday by buying out the contract of Markieff Morris. He’s been placed on waivers. Detroit has signed former University of Michigan guard Derrick Walton Jr. to a 10-day contract. Walton played a few games for the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this season. He was traded to the Atlanta Hawks earlier this month, and then released.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers edged the Southeastern University Fire 5-4 in an exhibition game yesterday afternoon. The Tigers rotated 20 position players and eight pitchers through the lineup, but very few of those anticipated to be on the Major League roster played. Prospect Tarik Skubal started, and struck out five over two innings.

Detroit’s Grapefruit League schedule begins today, against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Former Tigers pitcher Victor Alcántara has been suspended for 80 games following a positive test for a performance-enhancing drug. Alcántara made 46 relief appearances for Detroit last season, but is currently a free agent.

The Milwaukee Brewers begin their Cactus League schedule today against the Texas Rangers.
