Boomtown Saints win IFT – Monday Sports Wrap

Twilight League

Garnet Garage won the annual Leo Durocher Memorial Baseball Tournament yesterday, routing the Channing Railroaders 20-1 in the championship game. Garnet reached the final by edging Houghton Building Supply-Stanton 10-9 in one semifinal. Channing got past Mohawk Technology 15-14 in the other semifinal.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play this evening…
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Bucko’s/Labatts faces A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech at 6:30, then plays McGann’s/Northern Auto at 7:30.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Kopper’s takes on Downtowner Two at 6:30, and Pat’s Foods/Buckos at 7:30.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League action tonight at the Chassell field…
• Crush meets Superior Service at 5:45.
• Superior National Bank takes on Tervo Agency at 7:15.

NBA

The Bucks defeated the Suns 120-100 last night. Phoenix leads the NBA championship series 2-1, with game four set for Wednesday in Milwaukee.

MLB

Jorge Polanco’s three-run homer off Derek Holland in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Minnesota Twins a 12-9 victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday. Detroit had surged from behind when Jake Rogers hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth. Ben Rortvedt’s solo homer off Buck Farmer in the bottom of the ninth forced extra innings. Akil Baddoo also homered for Detroit.

Nick Castellanos singled home two runs in the top of the ninth, and the Cincinnati Reds downed the Milwaukee Brewers 3-1 yesterday. Brandon Woodruff gave up nine hits over six innings, but held Cincy to just one run. Josh Hader took the loss.

The Tigers and Brewers are off until Friday because of the All-Star break. The Summer Classic will be played tomorrow night in Atlanta. The Tigers will resume their series with a home day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. The Brewers will host the Cincinnati Reds.

In round one of the Major League Baseball Draft last evening…
• The Tigers took high school pitcher Jackson Jobe with the third overall pick, then added University of Texas hurler Ty Madden with a compensatory pick, at number 32.
• The Brewers selected Boston College outfielder Sal Frelick with the 15th pick, then claimed Wright State University second baseman Tyler Black with the 33rd pick.

The draft continues today, and concludes tomorrow.

Guts Frisbee

Lansing’s Boomtown Saints won their seventh title at the Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament yesterday. The Saints defeated the defending champion Appleton Assassins two sets to none in the best-of-three final match. Hancock’s Shottle Bop team placed third, and the Wolfpack from Marquette finished fourth. The late Dave Bolyard was named the Jon Davis/Dan Thornton Spirit of Guts Award winner. Thornton’s name was added to the trophy this year in honor of his 50th consecutive appearance at the IFT.

Run the Keweenaw

Justin Wilson swept the three main events at the Run the Keweenaw Trails Festival this weekend.
• Saturday morning, he won the 6k Mount Baldy Hill Climb, finishing 20 seconds ahead of Mark Ousdigian. Sam Kurkowski finished third overall, and was the fastest woman. See full results here.
• Saturday afternoon, Wilson dominated the Copper Harbor Trails Challenge 10k, finishing more than three minutes ahead of Lucy Westlake, who was the top woman. See full results here.
• Yesterday morning, Wilson bested Westlake by three minutes in the Carl Olson Memorial 25k to take the overall men’s championship. Westlake won the women’s title. See full results here.

• Calumet One faces 41 Lumber at Agassiz Park.
