Jeffers Jets LogoIn high school hockey, Jeffers won the first Lake Superior Conference Tournament Saturday with a 5-1 victory over Negaunee. Kingsford took third place with a 9-1 win over L’Anse in the consolation match. On Friday, in the first semi-final game, Jeffers defeated Kingsford 5-2. In the second game, L’Anse took Negaunee to triple-overtime, before falling 5-4.

The girls’ high school basketball regular season wrapped up Friday night…
– Hancock shut down Ironwood 50-16.
– Dollar Bay edged Lake Linden-Hubbell 47-43.

The girls’ tournament begins tomorrow…
– In Class D at Baraga, Dollar Bay faces Jeffers at 6:00, and Lake Linden-Hubbell meets Ontonagon at 7:30. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Class C at Calumet, L’Anse plays Hancock at 6:00, and Calumet faces Ironwood at 7:30.
– In Class B, Houghton opens at Menominee at 6:30. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

In boys’ action Friday night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated Calumet 71-38, and improved their record to 19-0.
– Hancock jumped out to a quick lead, and defeated West Iron County 46-31. Chad Raasio led the Bulldogs with 14 points off the bench. The Hancock defense held the Wykons to just 10 points in the first half.
– Houghton lost at Westwood 60-51. See video highlights from the game here.
– Jeffers defeated Ontonagon 58-38.
– Chassell got past Dollar Bay 68-65.
– Baraga downed Watersmeet 57-43.

MTU Ties, Falls at Minnesota State
In the battle for the top spot in the WCHA, third-ranked Michigan Tech and second-ranked Minnesota State fought to a 1-1 tie Friday night. Jamie Phillips stopped a career-best 43 shots in goal for the Huskies. On Saturday, the Mavericks snapped the Huskies’ nine-game unbeaten streak with a 4-2 victory. The loss means Tech trails Minnesota State by three points in the race for the WCHA title, with two games remaining for each team.

NMU Splits with LSSU
The Northern Michigan hockey team shut out Lake Superior State 5-0 Friday night, and fell to the Lakers 3-0 on Saturday. The Wildcats compiled a 3-1 record against LSSU this season, and won the Cappo Cup.

Finlandia Falls in GSAC Tourney
GSAC LogoThe Finlandia women’s basketball team couldn’t protect a 12-point lead, and lost to Agnes Scott College 50-45 in the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday. The Scotties scored the final 17 points of the game to claim the victory. Conference Player of the Year Marissa Burke led all players with 17 points, and L’Anse’s Valerie Rajala scored nine and led the Lions with 12 rebounds.

At the annual Dome Tournament in Marquette, the Finlandia softball team opened its season with a 5-1 loss to Edgewood College Saturday morning. The Lions fell to Wisconsin-Superior 6-2… then defeated Carroll University 7-3. Finlandia ended the day with a 9-1 loss to Lake Superior State. Today, the Lions will meet Marian University at 8:00… and Concordia-Wisconsin at 1:15.

Calumet Wolverines LogoThe Calumet Wolverines lost to the Fond du Lac Bears 6-5 in a shootout Friday night. The Bears scored four goals in the third period to force overtime. Josh Harju had two goals and two assists for Calumet. Saturday night, the Wolverines gave up four goals in the third period, and lost to Eagle River 8-6. Calumet will host the Falcons again this afternoon at 1:00.

The result of the Portage Lake Pioneers’ game against Fond du Lac Saturday night was not reported.

NHL – Red Wings Beat Nashville
Tomas Tatar’s third period goal lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators Saturday afternoon. Jonas Gustavsson made 37 saves to earn the win. The Wings host the Rangers Wednesday night. Face-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

Wings’ forward Darren Helm left Saturday’s game with an upper body injury after a collision. He’ll be evaluated today.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Wizards
The Detroit Pistons lost at Washington 99-95 Saturday night. The Pistons overcame a 21 point deficit, but the Wizards recovered to take the win. Greg Monroe had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Spencer Dinwiddie added 20 off the bench for Detroit. The Pistons play at New Orleans Wednesday.

Borak Takes CopperDog 150 Lead
CopperDog 150 LogoAl Borak moved from second place into first after the second leg of the CopperDog 150 dogsled race Saturday. Borak covered the distance between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor in 3:51.26. First-stage leader Bruce Magnusson struggled, and dropped to fifth place. Frank Holmberg moved into second place, six minutes off the pace. Dennis Laboda jumped up to third, and Joanna Oberg is fourth. Defending champion Jake Golton turned in Saturday’s best time, and moved up from 10th to sixth. Among local mushers, Tom Bauer is in 14th place, Chad Grentz is 17th, and Becky Bean is 21st. Mushers will travel from Copper Harbor back to Calumet today, and are expected to begin arriving shortly after noon. Listen for full coverage of the race on 97.7 The Wolf.

Sturmer Repeats at CopperDog 40
Matt Sturmer of Bruce Crossing on his second-straight CopperDog 40 race Friday night. Sturmer completed the run from Calumet to Eagle River in 3:29:15, six minutes ahead of Chad Schouweiler, and 10 minutes better than his winning time last year. Lynne Witte, Blair Braverman and Cynthia Sturmer rounded out the top five, with Calumet’s Jerry Trudell placing sixth. Local musher Greg Raskind finished ninth. See full CopperDog 40 results here.
