Both Huskies Hoops Teams Fall in GLIAC Finals; Women Head to NCAA Tourney – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

Boys basketball district playoffs begin tonight.
• In Division Two, Houghton plays at Negaunee in a quarterfinal game. Coverage begins at 5:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Escanaba, Gladstone and Kingsford have byes.
• Division Three, Hancock hosts Gwinn in a quarterfinal game at 6:00. Calumet, Westwood and Ishpeming have byes.
• Division Four, District 98 quarterfinals, Chassell plays at Baraga at 6:00. L’Anse tips off at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00. Jeffers and Lake Linden-Hubbell have byes.
• Division Four, District 97 quarterfinals hosted by Ironwood, Ontonagon faces Ewen-Trout Creek at 7:00 CST. Bessemer, Ironwood and Wakefield-Marenisco have byes.

Houghton will face East Grand Rapids in the state tournament semifinals. The Michigan High School Athletic Association re-seeded the final four last evening. The top-seeded Gremlins will play the fourth-seeded Pioneers Friday morning at 11:00 in Plymouth. Coverage will begin at 10:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Riverview Gabriel Richard and Flint Powers Catholic will meet in the other semifinal.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams lost in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament finals yesterday.

The men fell to Northern Michigan 79-66. Dan Gherezgher led the Huskies with 15 points.

The women suffered a 62-54 loss to Grand Valley State. Alex Rondorf paced Tech with 19 points. With a regular-season record of 22-6, the Huskies were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Midwest Region Tournament. The Huskies are seeded fourth, and will face fifth seed Trevecca Nazarene in the quarterfinals Friday at 7:30 at Ashland University.

NHL

The Red Wings lost to the Flyers 3-1 last night. David Perron scored Detroit’s only goal. Ville Husso made 34 saves.

The Wings have dropped six straight games, and host the Blackhawks Wednesday. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons have dropped seven straight, and entertain the Trailblazers this evening. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers fell to a split Minnesota Twins squad 6-2 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Jake Rogers hit a home run and a double. Starter Joey Wentz gave up a run on three hits over three innings.

The Tigers face the Red Sox this afternoon. Matt Manning will start for Detroit.

The Brewers lost to the Mariners 6-1. Starter Brandon Woodruff gave up one hit over two scoreless innings.

Milwaukee has today off.

CopperDog 150

Ryan Anderson won his first CopperDog 150 yesterday. The perennial UP 200 champ took the lead after the opening stage Friday, and held off strong challenges from runner-up Michael Bestgen, who finished 6:03 off the pace, and defending Champion J.R. Anderson, who was 18:20 off the lead in third place.

Lynne Witte earned an impressive victory in the CopperDog 80 Saturday. Witte dominated both stages, and finished 24 minutes ahead of Joann Fortier.

In the CopperDog 15 sprint at Copper Harbor Saturday, Sherry Johnson took the title, finishing 5:32 ahead of runner-up Matt Monke.

In the CopperDog 30 Friday night, Martha Schouweiler finished nearly 11 minutes ahead of Steve Goedken to take the crown.

Among local mushers:
• In the 150, Tom Bauer used a strong run Sunday to move up to sixth place. Sarah Tarlton finished eighth, and Maddie Longpre-Harrer 16th.
• In the 80, Alyssa Sarlund finished eighth, and Wade Canavan ninth.
• In the 15, Jerry Trudell finished third. Mara Grentz placed ninth.
• In the 30, Jerry Trudell placed fourth, Susan Serafini eighth, Suz Harris ninth, Chad Grentz 10th, Becky Bean 11th, and Haley Marchese 17th.
