Matthew Boyd struggled in his final start of the season, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Minnesota Twins 11-4 last night. Boyd couldn’t complete the fourth inning. He served up three home runs, and was charged with six runs on eight hits. The Twins put the game away by scoring five times in the fifth inning off Sandy Baez and Zach Reininger.

The Tigers conclude that series at Minnesota tonight. Francisco Liriano will start for Detroit. Gabriel Moya will serve as Minnesota’s opener, and Stephen Gonsalves will take over as the primary pitcher. Because of NFL football on 99.3 the Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Milwaukee Brewers clinched a playoff berth with a 2-1 victory over the Saint Louis Cardinals last night. Travis Shaw drove in both Milwaukee runs. Jhoulys Chacín gave up a run over five innings, and earned his 15th win of the season. Saint Louis had a chance to tie the game in the eighth inning, but pinch-runner Adolis Garcia stumbled while rounding third base, and was thrown out at the plate.

The Brewers have today off, and will begin their final series of the season at home against the Tigers tomorrow. Zach Davies will pitch against Jordan Zimmermann.

The Cubs also won last night, and also clinched at least a wild card playoff berth. Chicago remains a half-game ahead of Milwaukee in the race for the National League Central Division title. The Cubs have four games remaining; the Brewers have three.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings improved to 6-0 in the preseason, with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Boston Bruins last night. Boston jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but goals from Gustav Nyquist and Dennis Cholowski tied the game. Filip Zadina scored the game-winner just 24 seconds into the extra period. The Wings’ preseason schedule continues tomorrow night at Toronto. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.
