Brewers Fall in 10th – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Hancock v Chassell – no report.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell cruised past Ontonagon 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-13). Erin Seppala led the Lakes with 12 kills. MacKenzie LePage had 13 digs.
– Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Bessemer 3-2.

In cross country, local teams at the Dollar Bay Invitational on the Chassell Trails yesterday – results not reported.

In high school football tonight…
– Hancock plays at Calumet – pregame coverage begins around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Houghton entertains West Iron County
– L’Anse travels to Hurley.
– Ontonagon entertains North Dickinson.

Tomorrow…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Newberry. The inaugural class in the Lakes’ Hall of Fame will be inducted at a reception at the school at 9:30, and will also be saluted at halftime during the game. Read about the Hall of Fame members here.

In volleyball, L’Anse plays at the Northland Pines Tournament.

In hockey, Team Copper Country hosts Marquette for games at 11:30 and 4:00.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team plays at the Ripon Quadrangular this weekend. The Lions will face Simpson College tonight… and Ripon and Wisconsin-River Falls tomorrow.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Davenport University tonight.

The MTU volleyball team plays at Ferris State tonight, and Northwood tomorrow afternoon.

The Tech football team visits Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team entertains Davenport tomorrow afternoon.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers dropped an ugly 12-1 game to the Minnesota Twins last night. After missing several weeks with neck pain, Jordan Zimmermann threw three scoreless innings, but left after giving up three runs in the fourth.

The Tigers entertain the Twins again tonight. Daniel Norris will make his first start since July 5th for Detroit. Kyle Gibson will counter for Minnesota. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Kris Bryant’s two-run homer off Oliver Drake in the top of the 10th inning powered the Chicago Cubs past the Milwaukee Brewers 5-3 last night. Milwaukee led that game 3-2 going into the ninth, but Chicago pushed home a run off Jeremy Jeffress to force extra innings.

The Brewers continue that home set against the Cubs tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against John Lackey.

With nine games remaining, Milwaukee now trails Chicago by four and a half games in the National League Central Division. Any combination of six Cubs wins or Brewers losses clinches the division title for Chicago.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Los Angeles Rams held off a furious late comeback by the the San Francisco 49ers, and squeaked out a 41-39 victory. The Niners could have tied the contest after scoring a touchdown with two minutes remaining, but a two-point conversion attempt failed.

The Detroit Lions host the Atlanta Falcons in a 1:00 game Sunday. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers have a 4:25 game at home against the Bengals.

NHL
In NHL preseason play last night, the Detroit Red Wings lost to the Chicago Blackhawks 6-1. Petr Mrazek gave up all six goals on 31 shots.

Twilight League
Superior National Bank-Stanton will face the Marquette County Mavericks for Upper Peninsula baseball bragging rights tomorrow. The nine-inning game will pit the local Twilight League champion against the Superiorland League winner to establish a U.P. champion. Twilight League commissioner Daron Durocher says they’re hoping to make this an annual tradition. Action begins at 2:30 at the Stanton field.
