Brewers Open Playoffs Tonight – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight…
– Calumet travels to Ishpeming.
– Hancock entertains Negaunee.
– Chassell plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Ontonagon.
– L’Anse journeys to Wakefield-Marenisco.
– Baraga plays at Ewen-Trout Creek.

In cross country… Calumet, Hancock and Houghton will be among the teams competing at the Westwood Invitational at the Wawanowin Country Club.

The Michigan girls high school basketball tournament finals could return to the Breslin Center in East Lansing as soon as this season. The finals were played at Calvin College in Grand Rapids the past two years, because of potential conflicts if Michigan State’s women’s basketball team were to host a first-round NCAA tournament match. Under a new three-year agreement beginning this winter, Breslin will host unless the Spartans are selected to host an NCAA game. If that happens, DeVos Fieldhouse at Hope College in Holland will serve as the back-up site this winter. Read Fieldhouse at Western Michigan University will serve as the back-up location in 2021 and 2022.

Finlandia

Finlandia University’s Addie Budzinski has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. Budzinski scored her first career hat trick in the Lions’ recent win over Eureka College.

GLIAC

Michigan Tech’s Olivia Ghormley has been named the GLIAC North Division Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Will Ark of the MTU football team has been named the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week. Ark averaged 48 yards on eight punts in the Huskies’ loss to Grand Valley State.

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers visit the Washington Nationals for the National League Wild Card play-in game tonight. The winners go on to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs. The losers begin arranging tee times. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Max Scherzer.

The Detroit Tigers have shaken up their coaching staff, but only slightly. Bench coach Steve Liddle is retiring. Hitting coach Lloyd McClendon will replace him. Quality control coach Joe Vavra will take over the hitting responsibilities – he was manager Ron Gardenhire’s hitting coach for more than a decade with the Minnesota Twins. First base coach Ramon Santiago will move to third base, and third base coach Dave Clark will shift to first base.

Former Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has been fired by the Los Angeles Angels after just one season.

NFL

In last night’s NFL contest, the Pittsburgh Steelers routed the Cincinnati Bengals 27-3. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have picked at least eight games correctly to qualify to be our weekly winner.

Our high school football coverage continues with three games this weekend. On Friday, Hancock hosts Westwood on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com. Houghton plays at Gogebic on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Both broadcasts will begin at 6:40. On Saturday, we’ll provide bonus streamed coverage of the West Iron County at Lake Linden-Hubbell contest. The pregame show will start at 1:10 exclusively at KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University football team entertains Olivet College Saturday. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.
