The Detroit Tigers took yesterday off, and open a three-game set at Cleveland tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Josh Tomlin. Hear the first pitch at 6:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

After three years of dating, Verlander and model Kate Upton are officially engaged to be married. No wedding date has been set.

Tigers’ pitcher Jordan Zimmermann has been named the American League Pitcher of the Month. Zimmermann won all five of his April starts, and finished the month with an earned run average of 0.55 – the third-best April in Tigers’ history.

Tigers’ designated hitter Victor Martinez has been named the American League Player of the Week. Martinez batted .519 (14-for-27) for the week with three home runs, five doubles, eight RBI and eight runs scored.

The Milwaukee Brewers rode two big innings to an 8-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels last night. Jonathan Lucroy doubled home a pair of runs as the Crew scored four in the fifth inning. Jonathan Villar doubled in two as Milwaukee added four more runs in the sixth. Jimmy Nelson turned in another effective start, giving up two runs on four hits over seven innings to earn his fourth win of the season.

The Brewers series continues in Milwaukee tonight. The Brewers have brought Junior Guerra up from Colorado Springs to take Taylor Jungmann’s spot in the rotation. Nick Tropeano will start for the Angels.

NHL
In last night’s only NHL playoff game, the Penguins edged the Capitals 3-2. Pittsburgh leads that second-round series two games to one.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs, the Cavaliers opened their second-round series with a 104-93 victory over the Hawks. The Thunder got past the Spurs 98-97 to tie that series at a win per team.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have exercised their option to extend the contract of defensive end Ziggy Ansah for next season.
