Brewers’ Season Ends – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football tonight, L’Anse plays at Negaunee. Other local games have been canceled as we complete the first week of the suspension of face-to-face activities at Houghton County schools.

In volleyball, Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Bessemer.

MLB

In the National League Baseball playoffs yesterday…
• The Brewers were eliminated with a 3-0 loss to the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw struck out 13 Milwaukee batters over eight innings. Milwaukee starter Brandon Woodruff threw four shutout innings, but left as L-A scored all three of its runs in the fifth. The Dodgers win the wild card series 2-0.
• The Braves blanked the Reds 5-0. Atlanta wins that series 2-0.
• The Padres outslugged the Cardinals 11-9. That set is tied 1-1, and will be completed today.
• The Marlins and Cubs were rained out. That game will be made up today.

In the American League yesterday…
• The Athletics outscored the White Sox 6-4. Oakland wins that series 2-1.

Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander underwent Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery Wednesday. With recovery time typically a year or more, the earliest Verlander could return to the mound would be the spring of 2022, at age 39. His contract with the Houston Astros expires at the end of the 2021 season.

NBA

The NBA championship series between the Lakers and the Heat continues tonight. L-A leads the set 1-0.

NHL

Jimmy Howard will not return to the Detroit Red Wings next season. Howard spent 14 seasons in Detroit. He ranks third on the Wings’ all-time goaltender win list, but struggled badly last season. At age 36, he is a free agent, and general manager Steve Yzerman confirmed yesterday that the team would be moving on. The only goalie on Detroit’s roster is Jonathan Bernier. There is no heir apparent on the Grand Rapids Griffins’ roster, so the Wings will look to sign one of several free agents that will be available.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Broncos buried the Jets 37-28.

The Detroit Lions host the New Orleans Saints in a 1:00 game Sunday. The Packers entertain the Falcons Monday night. Hear both broadcasts on 99.3 The Lift.

Safety Jayron Kearse will be active for Sunday’s Lions game. Kearse signed a one-year free agent deal with Detroit before the season began, but had to serve a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

The Titans-Steelers game will not be played this weekend, after two more Tennessee players tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday. With a little juggling, the NFL hopes the game can be made up in week seven.

The Vikings, who played the Titans last Sunday, have tested clean. They returned to practice yesterday, and plan to play their game on Sunday at Houston.

Running

The POW/MIA 5K Bridge Run will begin Sunday at 2:00. Onsite registration will open at 1:30 at the ROTC Building at Michigan Tech. The cost is $20.00. Proceeds support veterans programs offered by the Hubbell VFW Post. You may also sign up in advance here.
