MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Chicago White Sox tonight. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against James Shields. Hear the first pitch at 7:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Pelfrey

The Tigers stood pat at the non-waiver trade deadline yesterday, making no deals.

An MRI has shown no structural problems with starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey’s back. He left Sunday’s game after five innings with stiffness. The official diagnosis is a grade one lower back strain, and he’s considered day-to-day. With yesterday’s day off, and the expected return of Jordan Zimmermann, Pelfrey could skip his next turn in the rotation.

The San Diego Padres scored five runs in the fifth inning, and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 7-3 last night. Jimmy Nelson gave up just one run through the first four innings, but couldn’t retire any of the five batters he faced in the fifth, and left after giving up Ryan Schimpf’s second triple of the game. Hernan Perez and Chris Carter homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers continue that series in San Diego tonight. Zach Daves will pitch against Luis Perdomo.

Milwaukee said goodbye to All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy yesterday. Lucroy and closer Jeremy Jeffress were traded to the Texas Rangers. In exchange, the Brewers got the Rangers’ second and third-ranked prospects – 22-year-old outfielder Lewis Brinson, and 20-year-old right-hander Luis Ortiz. Both were first-round draft picks, and both are playing in Double-A. A third player will also be added to the package later.

The Brewers also sent reliever Will Smith to San Francisco, in exchange for the Giants’ top prospect, right-hander Phil Bickford, and catcher Andrew Susac.

To fill the open spots on their roster, the Brewers called up reliever David Goforth and catcher Manny Piña from Triple-A Colorado Springs for last night’s game. Another player is expected to be added today.
