In boys high school basketball last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell edged Calumet 57-54. Arthur Lyons led the Lakes with 25 points. Jake Hyrkas scored 12 for the Copper Kings.
– Houghton downed Hancock 60-43. Hunter Richards scored 15 to lead a balanced Gremlins attack.
– Chassell slipped past Jeffers 68-65.
– Baraga defeated L’Anse 62-55. Brendan Varline scored 28 for the Vikings.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City game at Ontonagon was postponed – no makeup date has been provided.

– Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Bessemer tonight.

In girls action tonight…
– Houghton welcomes West Iron County.
– Chassell plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In high school hockey…
– L’Anse plays at the Petoskey Showcase this weekend, with their first game against Petoskey tonight.

Former Houghton High School hockey star Ray Brice will join the Michigan Tech Huskies. Brice’s commitment was announced yesterday by his current North American Hockey League team, the New Jersey Titans. Brice is third on the Titans in scoring in his second season in the NAHL.

MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team entertains Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow. Tip-off is at 5:00. The Huskies women’s basketball team hosts Finlandia for an exhibition game tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:00 at the SDC.

Quarterback Brandon Cowie has been named the Most Valuable Player of this year’s Michigan Tech football team. The university announced yesterday that Cowie received the Alan Bovard MVP award. He was also named offensive back of the year. Paul Kuoppala earned the Fred Baird Memorial Outstanding Defensive Player Award. Brett Gervais from Lake Linden earned both the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award and the defensive back of the year honor. Offensive lineman Frank Vruwink was picked as the recipient of the Ted Kearly Award, which goes to a player who practiced and competed with passion, pride and integrity. Vruwink was also the team’s offensive lineman of the year. The Daniel Dopp Memorial Outstanding Special Teams Player Award was given to punter Ryan VanGoethem, who also received the Omer LaJeunesse Award for scholastic achievement. The outstanding offensive player award went to receiver David Walter. The freshman of the year was cornerback Jaylyn Williams-Boone. Tech’s defensive lineman of the year was tackle Tanner Agen. Fellow senior defensive lineman Brandon Hutchison earned the Iron Man Award.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s team welcomes Grace Bible College tomorrow afternoon. The Wildcats women’s team is at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, where they’ll play Southern Indiana tomorrow afternoon, and the host team on Sunday.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team has added another player. Victor Pichardo is an outfielder and pitcher from Hastings, Texas.

GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tonight, and the Monroe Blues tomorrow night.

The Calumet Wolverines will host the Marquette Iron Rangers tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs for both games will be at 7:30 at the Colosseum.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to action tonight, when they host the Vancouver Canucks. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the St. Louis Rams took a big early lead, and held on to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23.

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers visit the Oakland Raiders in a 4:05 game. The Detroit Lions play at New Orleans Monday night.
