MLB

The Detroit Tigers built a big lead, then held off the Chicago Cubs for a 7-6 victory last night. Detroit batted around in the sixth inning, scoring five runs – four after two were out. Chicago made it close by scoring three in the top of the ninth off Buck Farmer before he retired a batter, but Farmer settled down, and retired three straight to close it out. Detroit had 18 hits in the game.

The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins this evening. Matthew Boyd will start against Randy Dobnak. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers’ game against the Reds was postponed last night, after Brewers players voted not to take the field to protest the shooting of Jacob Blake in nearby Kenosha. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today. Adrian Houser will pitch against Sonny Gray in the opener. Starters for the second contest have not been announced.

Games between the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres, and the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants were also called off, and will also be made up today. Several other MLB players decided to sit out of last night’s games, including Cubs outfielder Justin Heyward.

NBA

The athletic protests began yesterday afternoon at the NBA’s bubble in Orlando, when the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court for their playoff game against the Orlando Magic. All three of yesterday’s first-round games were eventually postponed, along with three WNBA contests and five Major League Soccer matches.

A meeting is scheduled for this morning to decided how – or if – the NBA playoffs will proceed. At least two teams have voted to call the season off.

Here are the games that are scheduled for today…

In the Western Conference…
• The Nuggets face the Jazz. Utah leads that series 3-2.
• The Clippers take on the Mavericks. L-A is up 3-2 in that set.

In the Eastern Conference, the Celtics and Raptors are scheduled to open their semifinal series today.

NHL

In NHL second round playoff action…

In the Eastern Conference at Toronto yesterday…
• The Lightning pounded the Bruins 7-1. Tampa Bay leads that set 2-1.
• The Flyers edged the Islanders 4-3 in overtime. That series is tied 1-1.

The Flyers and Islanders play again tonight.

In the Western Conference at Edmonton yesterday…
• The Avalanche outscored the Stars 6-4. Dallas leads that set 2-1.

Tonight, the Golden Knights face the Canucks. That series is tied 1-1.

Representatives from the NHL Players Association will meet this morning to discuss what actions they might take, following the Blake shooting.

Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green is retiring. Green played four-and-a-half of his 15 seasons in Detroit. The Wings traded him to the Oilers in February, but a knee injury ended his season after just two games.
