High School

In girls basketball last night…
• Hancock shut down Houghton 38-32. The Bulldogs trailed by four at halftime, and scored just two points in the third quarter, but outscored the Gremlins 14-6 in the final stanza to earn a split in the season series. Houghton’s Eva Gerard led all scorers with 14 points. Ella Storm scored 10 for Hancock, including four late free throws that sealed the win.
• Jeffers stopped L’Anse 41-30. Mia Nordstrom scored 19 for the Jets. Mylee Londo had 12 points for the Purple Hornets.
• Baraga smothered Chassell 79-13.
• The Ewen-Trout Creek-Watersmeet game was called off because of illness.

In boys play…
• Chassell defeated Baraga 51-38. Grady Olson paced the Panthers with 17 points, and Eli Danison added 10. Jayme Denomie led Baraga with 17 points.
• Christian Besonen’s three-pointer at the buzzer lifted Ewen-Trout Creek to a 57-56 win over Watersmeet.

On the girls schedule tonight…
• Calumet plays at Jeffers.

On the boys schedule…
• Calumet welcomes Ishpeming for Parents Night.
• Hancock hosts Republic-Michigamme.

• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tips off at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

The Houghton ski team will compete at the U.P. Finals at Powderhorn Mountain.

College Basketball

Michigan Tech’s Marcus Tomashek has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season. Tomashek scored 34 points in the Huskies’ victory over Northern Michigan Saturday.

NHL

Ben Chiarot’s goal 67 seconds into overtime lifted the Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Kraken yesterday. Moritz Seider, Lucas Raymond and Daniel Sprong also scored for Detroit. Alex Lyon made 38 saves.

The Wings entertain the Avalanche Thursday. Coverage will start at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons return from the all-star break Thursday at Indiana.

MLB

There are reports that the Brewers have signed a two-year deal with pitcher Brandon Woodruff. Woodruff missed much of last season with shoulder problems, and will not take the field this season, as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
