Calumet Advances in Volleyball Tourney, LL-H Falls – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

High school volleyball tournament regional semifinals were played last night…
• In Division Three, Calumet dispatched Manistique 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-16). Maddie Torola had 12 kills and two blocks. Jackie Kiilunen recorded eight kills and 12 digs. Izzy Loukus had 17 digs. Caitlyn Strom added eight kills and 16 digs, and Laina Kariniemi had 30 assists, seven digs and three kills. The Copper Kings are ranked seventh in the state, and will face unranked Roscommon tomorrow night at 7:00 in the regional final at Manistique High School. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Bucks outfought Charlevoix 3-2 (25-21, 15-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11) in their semifinal last night.
• In Division Four, Lake Linden-Hubbell’s tournament run ended with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-22) loss to Forest Park in their regional semifinal last evening. Abi Codere led the Lakes with six kills. Payton Goldsworthy had 11 assists, and Ashlyn Steves had 16 digs. The Trojans are ranked ninth in the state, and will take on unranked Stephenson tomorrow night at West Iron County.

Lake Linden High School has set up a charter bus for fans who wish to travel to the Lakes’ football playoff game Saturday at Marion. The bus will leave early Saturday morning, and return home after the game. Tickets cost $80. At least 50 riders will be needed to cover the cost. NHL

The Red Wings couldn’t overcome a 5-0 deficit, and fell to the Rangers 5-3 last night. Michael Rasmussen, Kim Kostin and Andrew Copp scored in the third period to narrow the gap. Ville Husso stopped 27 shots, and took the loss in net.

The Wings entertain the Canadiens tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, we’ll join the game in progress after Calumet volleyball on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Bucks tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Spencer Torkelson has been named Tiger of the Year by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Torkelson had a breakout season, slugging 31 home runs, with 94 RBI. He also led the team with 34 doubles, and 88 runs scored. Reliever Tyler Holton was named Tigers Rookie of the Year.
