Calumet Advances to Hoops District Final – Thursday Sports Wrap

In the boys high school basketball tournament last night…

In Division Three, Calumet advanced to the District final with a 51-39 victory over L’Anse. The Copper Kings surged to a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Purple Hornets narrowed the deficit to three early in the fourth quarter before Calumet turned the tide. Matt Ojala led the Copper Kings with 15 points, and Eli McParlan added 11. Reese Waara had 13 for L’Anse. Calumet will face unbeaten Iron Mountain for the District title at Iron Mountain tomorrow night. The Mountaineers held off a stubborn West Iron County squad 55-45 in the other semifinal last evening. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In Division Four District 97 at Ewen-Trout Creek, Jeffers’ season ended with a 62-43 loss to Bessemer. Ewen-Trout Creek advanced with a 48-39 victory over Wakefield-Marenisco. The Panthers and Speedboys will play for the district title tomorrow.

The Division Four District 98 semifinals will be played tonight. Chassell will host Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. That game will begin around 7:45, following the Chassell girls games. Hancock will play at Baraga at 7:30.

  • Lake Linden-Hubbell visits L’Anse.
  • Chassell entertains Republic-Michigamme – the JV and varsity games will start early, to accommodate the boys district semifinal.
  • Ontonagon journeys to Watersmeet.
  • Baraga welcomes Ewen-Trout Creek.

The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular basketball season wraps up tonight. Both Michigan Tech teams will host Northern Michigan University. The women’s game will tip off at 5:30, and the men’s contest at 7:30 at the SDC.

The Detroit Pistons’ three-game winning streak ended with a 105-93 loss to the San Antonio Spurs last night. Reggie Jackson scored 22 points, and Andre Drummond snared 17 rebounds. The Pistons visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday.

The Detroit Tigers outslugged the New York Yankees 10-4 yesterday, in a Grapefruit League game that was ended after seven innings because of rain. yesterday. Michael Fulmer struggled in his first exhibition start, giving up all four New York runs in the first inning. Detroit responded with five in the bottom of the first, and five more in the third. The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the the Cleveland Indians 6-1 yesterday. The Brewers will split their squads for games against the San Francisco Giants and the Cincinnati Reds today.
