Calumet, Baraga Win Volleyball Districts – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The Copper Kings celebrate a district title.

High school volleyball tournament district champions were crowned last night…
• In Division Three, Calumet swept Hancock 3-0 (25-10, 25-5, 25-20). The Copper Kings will face either Manistique or Iron Mountain in the regional semifinals Tuesday at Westwood. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Emeralds and Mountaineers will decide their district championship tonight.
• In Division Four, Baraga advanced with a 3-1 victory over Jeffers. The Vikings will face Ironwood Tuesday at Ontonagon. The Red Devils won their district title with a 3-0 sweep of Wakefield-Marenisco.

High school football 11-player district championships will be decided this weekend…
• In Division Six tonight, Calumet plays at Negaunee tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

• In Division Seven, Westwood hosts Charlevoix tomorrow.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain plays at Beal City tonight.

• In Division One, Rudyard plays at Newberry tonight.
• In Division Two, Forest Park plays at North Central this evening.

The Hancock hockey team will hold a returnable can and bottle drive tomorrow. Donations may be dropped off between 9:00 and 1:00 at Laurn Grove Park.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team held off Wisconsin-Oshkosh 71-67 in an exhibition game last night. Ellie Mackay scored 28 points for the Huskies.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team opens its season at the Merrill Thompson Classic at Wisconsin-Superior this weekend. The Lions will take on the host team tonight, and either Saint John’s or Wisconsin-River Falls tomorrow.

The Finlandia women’s team entertains Wisconsin-Oshkosh tonight at 5:30 at the Paavo Nurmi Center, and welcomes Mount Mary Sunday at 2:00.

College Soccer

Both Finlandia University soccer teams lost their opening games in their respective Coast to Coast Athletic Conference tournaments yesterday. The men fell 3-0 to Wisconsin-Whitewater, while the women lost 4-0 to Salisbury University.

The Tech soccer team plays at Purdue Northwest this afternoon, and hosts Northern Sunday afternoon at 1:00.

College Volleyball

The Tech volleyball team entertains Northwood today at 5:00, and hosts Lake Superior State tomorrow at 2:00.

Finlandia freshman Emily Wilson has been named to the All-Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference second team for volleyball.

College Football

The MTU football team plays at Northwood tomorrow.

The NMU football squad visits Saginaw Valley State.

The Finlandia University football team hosts Greenville University tomorrow. Coverage begins at 12:40 on the Voice of the Lions, 99.3 The Lift.

College Hockey

Tech hockey hosts Lake Superior State tonight at 7:07, and tomorrow at 6:07.

Northern hockey entertains Boston University tonight and tomorrow night.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team skates at Concordia-Moorhead tonight and tomorrow afternoon. The Lions men’s team visits Bethel College this afternoon and tomorrow evening.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 5-1 to the Boston Bruins last night. Patrice Bergeron scored four goals for the Bruins. Lucas Raymond netted Detroit’s only tally. Thomas Greiss made 32 saves in net, and took the loss.

The Wings visit the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons’ scoring struggles continued last night, with a 109-98 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. Jerami Grant led Detroit with 27 points.

The Pistons entertain the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 the Lift.

MLB

Two former Detroit Tigers outfielders are set to hit the free agent market. There are multiple reports that Avisaíl García has declined his option with the Milwaukee Brewers, and Nicholas Castellanos is opting out of his contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

NFL

In last night’s game, the Indianapolis Colts outscored the New York Jets 45-30. The teams combined to produce more than 1,000 yards on offense. 

On Sunday, the Green Bay Packers visit the Kansas City Chiefs. The Detroit Lions have the week off. In the Sunday night game, the Chicago Bears play the Steelers in Pittsburgh. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

With quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Kurt Benkert on the COVID-19 list, the Packers brought in some emergency help yesterday. Blake Bortles, who was in Green Bay’s preseason camp, has been signed to the practice squad. Jordan Love is expected to start Sunday’s game.
