Calumet Baseball, Softball Earn Playoff Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school baseball and softball playoffs last evening…
• In Division Three softball, Calumet defeated Westwood 10-0 in five innings. Lena Mhyren got the shutout win. Ryleigh Johnson and Mhyren each had two hits. Brooke Pomroy had three RBI, and Ashlee Johnson and Isabella Coppo each had two RBI. The Copper Kings will play Houghton in the district semifinals Saturday morning at 10:00 at Negaunee, with coverage on 97.7 The Wolf.
• In Division Four softball, Jeffers fell to Gogebic 25-1 in a game that ended after two innings because of the mercy rule. The Miners will face Ironwood in a district semifinal Friday morning at 10:00 Central Time at Ironwood.
• In Division Three baseball, Calumet blanked Westwood 11-0. Braydon Cima shut out the Patriots on just 51 pitches, striking out five and allowing just one hit and two walks. The Copper Kings got hits from Cima, Alex Tarnowski, Bruce Parisot, Ben Frantti and Darrin Berg. Calumet will play Iron Mountain in a district semifinal Saturday at 10:00 in Negaunee, with coverage on KBear 102.3.
• In Division Four baseball, L’Anse fell to Ironwood 7-0. The Red Devils will play Jeffers in one district semifinal Friday at 11:00 at Jeffers. Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Gogebic 19-7 in six innings. The Miners will take on Ontonagon in the other district semifinal at Jeffers Friday at 1:30.

In regular-season baseball yesterday, Jeffers swept Houghton, 8-0 and 5-0. In the first game, Levi Frahm was the winning pitcher, giving up just one hit and striking out five in three innings. Kyle Heltunen closed out the game on the mound. Brogan Turner, Kyle, and Levi each had two hits. In the nightcap, Cody Turner was the winning pitcher, striking out 11. Brogan Turner had two hits, and drive in two runs. The Jets close out the regular season with a record of 20-1.

In regular-season softball, Hancock won both of its games against Iron Mountain by forfeit.

In track, Houghton swept the Dan Juntilla Invitational yesterday.
• On the boys side, the Gremlins easily outscored second place Calumet, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third, and Negaunee fourth. Houghton’s Brody Mattila took the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, and the long jump. Amos Norland of the Blue Bolts won the 800 and 1600-meter runs.
• In the girls event, the Gremlins narrowly defeated runner-up Negaunee, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third, and Calumet fourth. Houghton’s Lily Ross won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Ashlea Datto of the Blue Bolts took the 100-meter run and the 100-meter hurdles. Caitlin Strom of the Copper Kings won the high jump and the long jump.

MLB

The Tigers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost 10-6 to the Rangers last night. Alex Faedo was chased in the fifth inning, and was charged with six runs. Jake Rogers and Andy Ibáñez homered. Miguel Cabrera had three hits. Riley Greene left the game in the third inning with what appeared to be a leg injury. He’ll be evaluated today.

The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Joey Wentz is expected to start against Dane Dunning. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list. He suffered an index finger injury in his last start. Outfielder Matt Vierling was added to the 10-day injured list with lower back soreness. Right-hander Braden Bristo and utility player Tyler Nevin have been called up to fill in. The Tigers also added some outfield depth by purchasing the contract of veteran center fielder Jake Marisnick from the White Sox. He’s expected to be activated for today’s game.

The Brewers lost to the Blue Jays 7-2 last night. The Milwaukee offense continued to struggle, collecting just four hits, including a William Contreras home run. Adrian Houser left in the fifth inning, and was charged with seven runs on 11 hits.

That series continues at Toronto tonight. Julio Teheran will pitch against Alek Manoah.

Milwaukee has placed Jesse Winker on the injured list. Infielder Abraham Toro has been called up.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League play this evening…
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Bucko’s/Labatts faces A and S Industrial/Loukus Tech at 6:15, then takes on Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics at 7:30.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, Amy J’s plays Superior Lube at 6:15, then meets Downtowner Two at 7:30.

Copper Country Horseshoe League

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Luigi’s edged Ahmeek Fire Department 5-4.
• Dreamland One defeated Calumet Electronics 6-3.
• Harter’s Party Store stopped Houghton Building Supply 8-1.
• Calumet One outscored Eva’s Hideaway 7-2.
• Bucko’s Party Store got past Mohawk Superette 5-4.
