Calumet Claims MacInnes Crown

Calumet spotted Houghton a 2-0 first period lead, then scored three unanswered goals to win the championship game of the annual MacInnes Holiday Classic hockey tournament 3-2 Saturday afternoon.

The Gremlins’ early tallies came from Brandon Trudeau and Dane Johnson. Scott Loukus and Tanner Rowe tied the game in the second period, and Loukus’ second goal of the game won it for the Copper Kings in the third frame. Alex Studebaker made 19 saves, as Calumet outshot Houghton 37-21.

It’s the first MacInnes title for the Copper Kings since 2010.

Hancock shut down Jeffers 6-1 in the consolation match. Austin Salani had a hat trick. Mason Mikesch, Colton Salani and Petr Anderson also scored for the Bulldogs. Daid Storm scored for the Jets.

Scott Loukus was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Austin Salani of Hancock, Tucker Tapani of Houghton and Tanner Rowe of Calumet were placed on the All-Tournament Team as forwards. Defensemen Tom Erkkila and Lincoln Beiring, and goaltender Alex Studebaker from Calumet rounded out the All-Tourney squad.

The Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 16-2 Saturday night. First-period goals by Wyatt Geshel and Tristan Foltz kept the Pios in the game early.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost their fifth straight game last night, 5-4 to the Florida Panthers. Goals by Darren Helm, Dylan Larkin and Frans Nielsen helped Detroit build a 3-1 lead early in the second period. The Panthers then scored four straight to take command. Luke Glendening added a late score for Detroit.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 136-109 decision to the San Antonio Spurs last night. Derrick Rose scored 24 points for the Pistons, who gave up 42 to the Spurs in the third quarter.

NFL

The Lions will be playing with heavy hearts. The youngest son of receiver Marvin Jones died on Friday. Mario Jones was six months old. No cause of death has been announced. Marvin Jones would not have played today, anyway – he’s recovering from an ankle injury. In an Instagram post, Marvin called Mario “a fighter from day one.” The team issued a statement expressing sympathy, and asking for privacy for the family.

Our high school basketball coverage continues Thursday, when the Chassell boys play at Hancock. Our pregame show will begin around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
