Calumet Clinches Playoff Berth – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football last night…
– Calumet clinched a playoff berth by crushing Houghton 51-14. Dryden Nelson scored four touchdowns for the Copper Kings.
– Hancock lost at Iron Mountain 42-6. The Bulldogs’ only touchdown play was an eight-yard Austin Salani to Connor LeClaire pass.
– L’Anse fell to Westwood 30-6. The Purple Hornets’ only score came on a fourth-down touchdown pass from Alex Kissel to Tanner Lane.

Carter Crouch scores in the rain, as Lake Linden-Hubbell rolls over Munising.

– Lake Linden-Hubbell pounded Munising 56-6. Caleb Gregoire and Carter Crouch each ran for three touchdowns. Cole Gregoire and Luke Marcotte each returned interceptions for scores.
– Ontonagon lost to Carney-Nadeau 50-0.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University volleyball team is at Wisconsin-Oshkosh for the Marty Peterson Invitational this weekend. The Lions lost to Luther College 3-0 (25-8, 25-12, 25-16) and Wisconsin-Superior 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-13) last evening, and face Saint Norbert and the host team today.

The Finlandia football team plays at Kalamazoo College this afternoon. 

The Lions men’s soccer team hosts Emmaus Bible College today at 1:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com. The women’s team entertains Mount Mary today at 5:00. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to the game. 

Because of bad weather predicted for tomorrow, the Finlandia benefit softball game against Bay College has been moved back to October 20th. Money raised will assist Hancock City Manager Barry Givens in his fight against cancer.

WCHA

The Michigan Tech hockey team opened its Western Collegiate Hockey Association campaign with a 3-2 loss to Alaska last night. The Nanooks scored all of their goals in the second period. Brian Halonen and Tommy Parrottino scored for the Huskies. Those teams play again tonight. Faceoff is at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team began its season with a 5-3 loss to Michigan State University. Those teams face off again tonight in Marquette.

GLIAC

The Tech volleyball team breezed to an easy 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-8) victory over Wayne State University last night. The Huskies host Ashland this afternoon at 4:00.

The MTU football team entertains Northern Michigan University this afternoon at 1:00 at Sherman Field at Kearly Stadium.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons overcame a 19-point deficit to edge the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-105 in a preseason game last night. Andre Drummond scored 15 points.

Former Detroit Tiger Aníbal Sánchez threw 7-2/3rd no-hit innings, as the Washington Nationals defeated the Saint Louis Cardinals 2-0 in the opening game of the National League championship series last night. Game two will be played in Saint Louis this afternoon.

The American League championship series begins tonight, when the New York Yankees visit the Houston Astros.

NFL

The Packers and Lions will meet in the Monday night game on 99.3 The Lift.
