Calumet Falls in Regional – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Calumet High School football team ended one of the finest seasons in school history with a 14-0 loss to Maple City Glen Lake in a Division Six regional football contest Saturday afternoon. Both of the Lakers’ touchdowns came in the first half. The Copper Kings had several scoring opportunities, moving the ball into the red zone three times, but couldn’t break through a stubborn Glen Lake defense. Calumet finishes the season with a record of 10-2 – the most wins in a season in school history.

The Michigan Tech hockey team scored twice in the third period to put away a 4-2 victory over Lake Superior State Saturday night. Jake Lucchini put the Huskies on the board first, but the Lakers responded with two straight scores to take the lead. Joel L’Esperance tied the contest with five minutes remaining in the second period.  Tyler Heinonen scored the game-winner early in the third, and L’Esperance added his second goal of the night late in the game. Angus Redmond stopped 18 shots to earn the win in net. The victory concluded a weekend sweep of LSSU, after a 6-1 victory Friday night.

The MTU volleyball team ended its regular season with a dominating 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-15) victory over Lake Superior State Saturday. Tech lost 3-1 to Saginaw Valley State Friday. The Huskies finish with a record of 16-14 overall, and 11-6 in conference play. They are seeded fifth in the GLIAC tournament, which they will open Wednesday at fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State.

The Tech football team wrapped up its season with a lopsided 59-21 loss to Findlay on Saturday. The Oilers built a 38-0 halftime lead, which they increased to 52-0 early in the third period. The Huskies finish with a record of 4-6 – their first losing season since 2009.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team opened its season with a gritty 80-75 overtime victory over Lewis University. Tommy Lucca scored 24 points in his first game as a Husky, including a couple of critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter. Bryan Heath added 23. The Huskies continue play at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge today against Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Tech women’s team started its campaign with a 60-47 win at Minnesota-Duluth. Morgan Anderson and Elizabeth Kelliher each scored 14 points.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team was swept at Bowling Green, falling 5-3 to the Falcons after a 5-1 loss Friday night.

The Wildcats football team concluded its season with a 56-7 loss at Tiffin.

At the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Illinois, the Wildcats pounded Wisconsin-Parkside 97-75 Saturday night. NMU will face Lewis today.

The Northern women’s team opened play at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge at Grand Valley State with a 59-56 victory over Truman State University Saturday night. The Wildcats will face Quincy University today.

Stefen Seel’s goal with 46 seconds remaining lifted Concordia-Wisconsin to a 4-3 victory over the Finlandia University men’s hockey team Saturday. The Lions had tied the game at three on a Bryce Mitzel goal midway through the third period. Alex Rezansoff and Tommy Malkmus also scored for the Lions. Walker Enstad made 23 saves, and took the loss in goal. The Lions dropped a 5-2 decision to the Falcons Friday night.

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team will welcome Marian University today at 4:45. The Lions lost 7-1 to eighth-ranked Lake Forest College Friday afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Montreal Canadiens 5-0 Saturday night. Jimmy Howard gave up all five Montreal goals over the first two periods. Petr Mrazek relieved him, and turned in a scoreless third period. The Wings are off until Tuesday, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons broke their three-game losing streak with a 106-95 victory over the Denver Nuggets Saturday evening. Marcus Morris led a balanced Detroit attack with 17 points. The Pistons host the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night.

The Green Bay Packers visit the Tennessee Titans for a 1:00 game today.

The Detroit Lions have the weekend off.
