Calumet Girls Rout L’Anse, Stay Unbeaten – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In girls’ high school basketball last night…
– Calumet led by eight at halftime… then scored the first 10 points of the second half, and went on to rout L’Anse 56-26. The Copper Kings’ defense held L’Anse to just six baskets from the field. Lexie Rowe and Ellen Twardzik each scored 15 for Calumet. Lindsey Hulkonen led the Hornets with eight points.
– The Baraga game at Lake Linden-Hubbell has been tentatively rescheduled to January 19th.
– The Jeffers game against Republic-Michigamme was canceled – no make-up date has been announced.
– The Chassell game at Ontonagon has been rescheduled to January 15th..

In boys’ play last night…
– Jeffers defeated Hancock 55-39. The Jets led by five at halftime, and put the game away by outscoring the Bulldogs 15-5 in the third quarter. Zach Nicholas led all scorers with 18 points for the Jets. Hans Stimac scored 16 for the Bulldogs.
– The Houghton game at Negaunee was canceled. No make-up date has been set.
– The Lake Linden-Hubbell game at Republic-Michigamme has been tentatively rescheduled to January 26th.

Finlandia Hoops Teams Split
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia women’s basketball team rode a dominant first half to a 66-45 victory over Northland College last night. The Lions were up by 16 at the break. Micheala Burke led the Lions with 14 points. Brooke Pasanen added 12.

The Finlandia men’s team lost a tight 62-59 decision at Northland last evening. The Lions got off to a slow start, and trailed by 14 late in the first half. They closed the gap to a single point on a Brandon Robinette three pointer with 14 seconds remaining, but Dan Campion hit a couple of free throws to seal the win for the Lumberjacks.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 yesterday afternoon. Lindsey Jackman scored the Lions’ only goal on a third period power play.

NHL – Red Wings Edge Oilers
Pavel Datsyuk’s power play goal with 34 seconds remaining lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-2 victory over Edmonton last night. Datsyuk’s goal broke the tie. Luke Glendening sealed the win with an empty-netter as time expired. The Wings skate at Calgary tonight. Faceoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons v Spurs
Brandon Jennings intercepted a bad inbound pass with seven seconds remaining, drove the length of the court, and scored the winning basket, as the Detroit Pistons edged San Antonio 105-104 last night. Detroit rallied from an 18-point first half deficit to win its sixth straight game. Andre Drummond scored 20 points, and snared 17 rebounds. The Pistons play at Dallas tonight.

MLB – Tigers Sign Gorzelanny
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoThe Detroit Tigers have signed reliever Tom Gorzelanny to a one-year contract. Gorzelanny pitched for the Brewers the past two seasons. To make room for Gorzelanny on the 40-man roster, the Tigers designated pitcher Luke Putkonen for assignment. Putkonen missed most of last season after elbow surgery. If no other team claims him, Detroit could still invite him to spring training.
