High School

In boys basketball last evening…
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City downed Calumet 48-41. Amos Norland paced the Blue Bolts with 19 points. Levi Kilpela scored 12 for the Copper Kings.
• Hancock fell to Ironwood 50-40. Vandan Jacques scored 20 for the Bulldogs.
• Chassell got past Republic-Michigamme 46-35.
• Ontonagon lost to Watersmeet 79-53.
• Ewen-Trout Creek fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 57-45.

In girls action…
• Calumet used a strong finish to outscore Houghton 51-34. The Gremlins led by six at the end of the first quarter. The Copper Kings grabbed a one-point lead at halftime, then held Houghton to just eight points in the third quarter, and none in the fourth quarter. Helen Beiring led a balanced Calumet attack with 11 points. Caitlin Strom and Laina Kariniemi each added 10. Clea Ollankato scored 10 for the Gremlins.
• Baraga downed Jeffers 43-28. Corina Jahfetson scored 18 for the Vikings. Sara Johnson had 14 for the Jets.
• L’Anse stopped Chassell 58-40. Brooklyn Dompier led the Purple Hornet with 29 points. Trisha Pietila scored 20 for the Panthers.
• Ontonagon defeated Watersmeet 51-19.
• Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Wakefield-Marenisco 49-40.

In boys play tonight…
• Houghton entertains Marquette. The varsity game will tip off at 5:45.

On the girls schedule…
• Houghton welcomes Escanaba for a make-up game from February 3rd. Coverage will begin around 7:00 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
• Hancock travels to Westwood.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Watersmeet.

Three members of the Houghton ski team qualified for the state championships at the regional tournament at Nub’s Nob at Harbor Springs yesterday. The girls team finished seventh out of 12 teams. Rachel Sun placed 10th in the slalom to qualify for the state meet. The boys team finished sixth out of 12 teams. Eli Heathman placed 3rd in the slalom, and Jack Haeussler placed 12th to qualify for the state meet.

College Hockey

The Finlandia women’s hockey team fell 3-0 to Marian University yesterday. The Lions were outshot 52-22.

The Central Collegiate Hockey Association has named Michigan Tech’s Kyle Kukkonen Forward of the Week, and Brett Thorne Defenseman of the Week.

College Basketball

Finlandia’s Natalie Bartle has been named the Coast to Coast Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Bartle scored 70 points in the Lions’ wins over Mount Mary and Maranatha Baptist.

NHL

The Red Wings ripped the Canucks 6-1 last night. Dylan Larkin scored Detroit’s first two goals. Ville Husso made 29 saves.

The Wings visit the Oilers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Celtics tomorrow.

MLB

The Tigers have agreed to a minor league contract with right-handed reliever Matt Wisler. Wisler had a 2.25 earned run average with the Rays through 39 games last summer, before his season ended because of a neck strain.

The MLB ghost runner rule has been made permanent. The league’s joint competition committee has unanimously approved continuing the practice of placing a runner at second base at the start of every extra inning in the regular season.
