Calumet Hockey Falls to Hancock, but Claims CIC Title – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey…
• Calvin Heinonen’s goal in overtime lifted Hancock to a 1-0 victory over Calumet in the final game of the Copper Island Classic last night. Saku Cunard earned the shutout in net, with 13 saves. Despite the loss last evening, Calumet won the John H. Sherf Trophy trophy by outscoring Hancock 4-3 in the total-goals series. 
• Jeffers lost 5-0 to Marquette. Simon Rajala made 47 saves, as the Jets were outshot 52-9.

In high school boys basketball last night…
 • Hancock got past L’Anse 49-36. Myles Lewis led the Bulldogs with 17 points. Ned Larson added 12, and Vandan Jacques netted 11. Easton Foucault scored 10 for the Purple Hornets.
 • Baraga fell to Watersmeet 77-42.

In girls action last evening…
• Houghton pounded Iron Mountain 75-50. The Gremlins led 43-15 at halftime, and used bench players liberally in the second half. Meghan Trewhella scored 14 for Houghton, and Annika Peterson added 10.
 • Calumet shut down Ontonagon 43-26.
 • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City downed Bessemer 48-37.
 • L’Anse outscored North Dickinson 49-42.
 • Baraga stopped Watersmeet 56-27.

Marquette swept the Houghton ski team’s invitational yesterday. The Gremlin girls placed fourth, with Rachel Sun finishing 6th in the slalom and 9th in the giant slalom. The Gremlin boys took second place, led by a first place in slalom and second place in giant slalom from Eli Heathman. Jack Haeussler took fourth and fifth place finishes.

The Calumet gymnastics team competes at Marquette today.

College Basketball

The Finlandia men’s team fell 116-63 at Bethany Lutheran in Mankato yesterday. Noah Prestia led the Lions with 12 points.

The Finlandia women’s team lost 74-63 at Northwestern in Saint Paul yesterday. Natalie Bartle scored 29 for the Lions.

College Hockey

The Finlandia men’s hockey team pulled out a 2-1 overtime victory over Northland last evening. Garrett Alton scored for the Lions in the first period. Former Houghton Gremlin Brendan Erickson netted the game winner in the extra period.

Michigan Tech’s Brett Thorne has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week.

Nordic Skiing

The U.S. Cross Country Ski National Championships continues with the classic sprint event today. Competition begins at 9:30 on the Tech Trails.

The classic 10/20K mass start distance race will be held on Friday. The week concludes with the SuperTour skate sprint on Saturday.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Warriors tonight.

Detroit will be without Marvin Bagley III for six to eight weeks. He’ll need surgery to repair two broken fingers.

NHL

The Red Wings entertain the Devils tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers yesterday. Vrana recently returned to Detroit after two months in the players assistance program. He was on a rehab assignment with the Grand Rapids Griffins. If he’s not claimed by another team today, he’ll stay with Grand Rapids, but will no longer be on Detroit’s roster. The move makes way for Robby Fabbri’s return from the injury list.
