Calumet Hockey Mercies Escanaba – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey Saturday…
– Calumet scored four times in the first five minutes, and cruised to an 8-0 victory over Escanaba. The game ended after the second period because of the mercy rule. Tanner Rowe notched a hat trick, Dean Loukus scored twice, Scott Loukus and Gabe Coppo each found the net once, and Cliff Jurmu collected his first varsity goal. The Copper Kings outshot the Eskymos 36-8. Sam Kiiskila got the shutout win in net.
– Jeffers lost at Rhinelander 5-3. Matthew Halonen scored twice for the Jets.
David Store tied the game at 3-3 midway through the third period, but the Hodags responded with two quick tallies to put the game away. Simon Rajala made 30 saves in net.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey settled for a weekend split with Ferris State University, after a 2-1 loss Saturday night. The Huskies fell behind early. Tommy Parrottino’s goal midway through the third period tied the game, but the Bulldogs scored late to earn the win. Matt Jurusik made 22 saves.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 4-2 victory at Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday night.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost its third straight game Saturday, falling 81-66 at Davenport University. Ellie Mackay led the Huskies with 13 points.

The Tech men’s team grabbed a big early lead, then held on to defeat Davenport 69-61. Kyle Monroe scored 23 points.

Northern Michigan split their games at Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. The women fell 58-41, and the men upset the 11th-ranked Lakers 75-73.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 10-0 to Adrian College Saturday. The Bulldogs outshot the Lions 63-10.

The men’s hockey team fell 10-1 at Saint Norbert Saturday. Tyler Watungwa scored the Lions’ only goal.

The Finlandia basketball teams split their contests at Bay College Saturday. The women’s team defeated the Norse 50-45. Carsyn Osterman led a balanced Lions attack with 14 points, and Bailey Froberg added 13, as FinnU played without leading scorer Katie Lundeen.

The men’s team lost 96-78 to the Norse. Joe Heinonen scored 18 for the Lions.

NHL

Because of the NHL All-Star break, the Detroit Red Wings are off until they visit the New York Rangers Friday night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers edged the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 54 in overtime Saturday night.

The Calumet Wolverines fell to the De Pere Deacons 14-9 Saturday.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 121-111 in overtime to the Brooklyn Nets last night. Derrick Rose led Detroit with 27 points. Andre Drummond returned, and scored 20 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
