Calumet, Houghton Earn Easy Hockey Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

In high school hockey last night…
– Calumet defeated Marquette 6-1 in a game that ended in the middle of the third period when a glass panel fell out at Lakeview Arena.
– Houghton scored five goals in the third period to pull away from Kingsford 9-3.

In girls basketball action…
– Calumet edged Jeffers 60-55. Leah Bjorn and Hailey Wickstrom had double-doubles for the Copper Kings. Alexa Clouthier scored 17 for the Jets.
– Houghton defeated L’Anse 68-48.
– Hancock rolled over Bessemer 56-21.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell beat Watersmeet 52-40. Kirsten Codere led the Lakes with 16 points. Alexa Destrampe added 10.
– Baraga slipped past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 32-29.
– Chassell downed Ewen-Trout Creek 43-32.
– Ontonagon shaded Wakefield-Marenisco 40-36.

The Detroit Red Wings overcame an early two-goal deficit, and edged the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 in a shootout last night. Anthony Mantha and Thomas Vanek scored in the second period to tie the game. Vanek and Henrik Zetterberg found the net in the shootout. Petr Mrazek recovered after allowing three goals in the first period, and made 31 saves. The Wings return home to host the Columbus Blue Jackets Friday evening. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons squandered a big lead, then regrouped and defeated the Chicago Bulls 102-91 last night. Detroit built a 17-point advantage 20 minutes into the game. Chicago came back and took a four-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but the Pistons regained control after that. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 22 points. The Pistons play at Charlotte tonight. Tipoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The roster wheel continues to spin for the Detroit Lions. Defensive end Armonty Bryant and tight end Brandon Pettigrew are done for the season because of injuries. The Lions signed cornerback Asa Jackson off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad, and brought back running back Joique Bell, who was recently cut by the Chicago Bears.

The Milwaukee Brewers have traded pitcher Tyler Thornburg to the Boston Red Sox. In exchange, the Crew gets Travis Shaw, who played third and first base for the Sox last season, along with a couple of prospects.
