Tigers Face Elimination in ALDS
The Detroit Tigers have their backs to the wall, after losing game two of their American League Divisional Series to the Orioles 7-6 yesterday. The Tigers took their first lead of the series with a five-run fourth inning, thanks to homers by J.D. Martinez and Nick Castellanos. Justin Verlander struggled through five innings, but left with a 5-3 lead. Detroit added a run in the eighth on Victor Martinez’ rbi double, and the brought Joba Chamberlain in to pitch the bottom of the inning. He and Joakim Soria gave up the four runs that allowed the Orioles to come back and win the game.

With Detroit trailing two games to none, the best-of-five series will continue tomorrow afternoon in Baltimore. David Price will start against Miguel Gonzalez. We’ll join the game in progress after Detroit Lions football on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Outfielder Rajai Davis left yesterday’s game in the fourth inning, after his sprained pelvic ligament tightened up as he ran the bases. He’s questionable for tomorrow’s game.

For the second straight game, the Royals scored the winning run in the 11th inning, and went on to beat the Angels 4-1. Kansas City leads that Series two games to none, with game three set for tomorrow.

Both National League Division Series began yesterday. The Giants edged the Nationals 3-2. The Cardinals got past the Dodgers 10-9. Game two of both of those series will be played today.

Lions Prepare for Bills
Detroit Lions LionIn NFL action, the Lions will host the Bills tomorrow afternoon. Kickoff is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. We’ll join the Tigers’ game in progress as soon as the Lions are done.

Detroit receiver Calvin Johnson is listed as questionable for the game because of his ankle injury. Running backs Joique Bell and Theo Riddick will miss the contest – Bell because of concussion symptoms, and Riddick because of a hamstring injury.

Red Wings Fall at Toronto
Red Wings LogoThe Detroit Red Wings lost at Toronto 5-1 in exhibition play last night. The Wings play their final preseason game this evening at Boston. We will cover the Red Wings again this season on FM 99.3 and AM 1400 WCCY.

Pavel Datsyuk skated with the team in practice yesterday, but is not close to returning to game action. The team has put him on the injured reserve list because of the separated shoulder he suffered in the game against Pittsburgh on September 22nd. He’s expected to miss the first half-dozen regular-season games.

MTU Soccer Wins Fifth Straight
The Michigan Tech soccer team spotted Ohio Dominican a goal in the first half, then came back to beat the Panthers 2-1, Lexi Herreweg tied the game with a penalty-shot goal off the crossbar, and Taylor Archibald scored her first collegiate goal to win it. Tech has won five in a row, and remains unbeaten in GLIAC play. The Huskies host Walsh tomorrow at noon.

The Tech hockey team opens its season tonight and tomorrow night at Lake Superior State.

The MTU football team has the weekend off.

The Huskies’ volleyball team opened a weekend road trip with a 3-0 victory at Walsh Friday night. Sylvie Rokosh Aubrey Havlichek each had nine kills. Tech will play at Malone this afternoon.

The Northern Michigan University football team plays at Saginaw Valley State this evening.

Finlandia
Finlandia LionsThe Finlandia volleyball team lost 3-1 to Crown College Friday evening. The Lions will face Martin Luther College and North Central University today.

The Lions’ women’s soccer team entertains Maranatha Baptist Bible University today. The start time for that game has been moved up from 1:00 to 11:00. The Lions travel to Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a game Sunday afternoon.

In high school football last night…
– West Iron County took command of the WestPAC with a 40-26 victory over Calumet. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but Alec Schmelebeck ripped off touchdown runs of 61 and 47 yards to break the game open. Schmelebeck finished the night with more than 300 yards rushing, and five touchdowns. Robert Erkkila scored three times for the Copper Kings. West Iron remains unbeaten on the season, and clinched a playoff berth with the victory. Calumet falls to 3-1 in conference play, and 3-3 overall, and will need to win its final three games to assure a playoff spot.
– Houghton lost at Northland Pines 53-16.
– L’Anse outscored Ironwood 42-30. The Purple Hornets can clinch a playoff berth with wins in at least two of their final three games.
– Baraga lost at Hurley 51-6.
– Ewen-Trout Creek won this week’s game by forfeit, after Mid-Peninsula folded its program.

Today…
Lake Linden Warner Field Stands– Lake Linden-Hubbell celebrates homecoming with a game against Hancock. The Lakes need only two more wins to clinch a playoff berth. Our pregame coverage begins at 1:10 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Ontonagon entertains Gogebic in an eight-man contest. The game will count in the standings for the Gladiators, who are playing in the eight-man division this season. It will not count for the Miners, who play the rest of their games in the 11-man division.

In high school volleyball today, Houghton, Calumet, and Hancock will be among the teams playing at the NMU Tournament in Marquette.
