MTU
The Michigan Tech football team opened its season with a 38-14 victory over Truman State last night. After finishing the first quarter tied at 14, the Huskies ran off 24 unanswered points to put the game away. John Williams rushed for three touchdowns.

The Tech volleyball team began its season with a tight 3-2 loss at Hillsdale last evening. The Huskies will continue play at the Hillsdale tournament against Indianapolis today, and Glenville State and Findlay tomorrow.

The Tech women’s soccer team begins its season on the road at Winona State tonight.

The Michigan Tech hockey team has added another goaltender for the upcoming season. Patrick “Packy” Munson started 20 games for the University of Vermont two seasons ago. He then transferred to Denver, and was required by NCAA rules to sit out last season. He’ll enter MTU as a junior, and will be eligible to play immediately.

Finlandia
Both Finlandia University soccer teams will open their seasons at Northland College this afternoon.

The Finlandia volleyball team is at a tournament in Lake Forest, Illinois. They’ll face Aurora University and the University of Dubuque this evening.

MLB
Justin Verlander and Justin Upton are no longer Detroit Tigers. The Tigers traded Verlander to the Houston Astros just before last night’s deadline for him to remain eligible for post-season play. In return, Detroit gets three of Houston’s top 11 prospects – pitcher Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers. The Tigers will also provide either some cash to help defray Verlander’s salary, or an additional player. Upton is now a Los Angeles Angel. Detroit gets pitcher Grayson Long, who is rated as L-A’s ninth-best prospect. Upton had hinted that he was leaning toward opting out of his contract and becoming a free agent at the end of the season.

The Tigers had yesterday off, and play an afternoon-evening doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians today. The first game is a makeup from June 30th. Pregame coverage begins at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift. Matthew Boyd will face Carlos Carrasco. The broadcast for the second game will start at 6:45. Buck Farmer will start against Mike Clevinger.

The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Washington Nationals 6-3 last night. Zach Davies went seven innings, and earned his 16th win of the season. Jonathan Villar homered.

The Brewers host the Nationals again tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Tanner Roark.

The Cubs also won, so Milwaukee remains three-and-a-half games back in the National League Central Division race.

NFL
The Detroit Lions closed their preseason schedule with a 27-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills last night. The Green Bay Packers concluded their exhibition campaign with a 24-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
