Calumet, LL-H Claim District Volleyball Crowns – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In the high school volleyball tournament last night.
– In Class C, Calumet claimed the district title, with an easy 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-9) victory over Chassell. Leah Bjorn had 17 kills. It’s the sixth consecutive district championship for the Copper Kings. They’ll face the winner of tonight’s game between St. Ignace and Indian River Inland Lakes in the regional semifinal Tuesday evening at Gladstone.
– In Class D, Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-19) to earn the district crown. Mariah Willmer had 10 kills for the Lakes. Joslynn Perala had 11 digs, and Erin Seppala added 10. The Lakes will face Munising in the regional semifinal Tuesday at Westwood.

Finlandia
The Finlandia men’s hockey team opens its season at home against the Milwaukee School of Engineering tonight. Faceoff is at 7:15 at the Houghton County Arena. The Lions will entertain Concordia-Wisconsin tomorrow afternoon at 4:00. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and 993TheLift.com. The first 50 fans to attend each game will receive a special gift from Coca Cola of Hancock and 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions women’s hockey team skates at Trine University in Indiana tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia volleyball team opens the American Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament against Alfred State University tomorrow at 2:00. The Lions are the top seed in the tournament. Alfred State is hosting the event, in Alfred, New York.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team begins play in the ACAA tournament tomorrow at 3:00 against SUNY-Canton. The Lions are seeded third. The tournament is being held in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, at the University of Valley Forge.

The Finlandia University football team plays at Trinity Bible College tomorrow afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team lost their exhibition match against Division One Wisconsin-Green Bay 87-49 last night. Brenna Heise led the Huskies with 16 points.

Two Huskies soccer players have received postseason honors from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Kirsen Hudak was named the All-Conference Second Team goaltender, and defender Rachel Wall earned honorable mention votes.

The Tech hockey team hosts Bowling Green tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs are at 7:07 at the John MacInnes Student ice Arena.

The MTU football team plays at Tiffin tomorrow afternoon.

The Huskies volleyball team plays at Northern Michigan University tomorrow.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team welcomes Minnesota State tonight and tomorrow night.

The Wildcats football team plays at Wayne State tomorrow.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Ottawa Senators 3-1 last night. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s only goal late in the third period. Jimmy Howard stopped 27 of 29 shots. The Wings will play at Edmonton Sunday afternoon.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Milwaukee Bucks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the New York Jets built a big early lead, and held off the Buffalo Bills 34-21.

The Detroit Lions visit the Green Bay Packers in the Monday night game.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers makeover continues. Utility player Andrew Romine was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners yesterday. Pitcher Jeff Ferrell, and outfielders Alex Presley, Tyler Collins and Jim Adduci were outrighted to the Minor Leagues. They are expected to become free agents.

Meanwhile, the Tigers officially introduced their coaching staff yesterday. Hitting coach Lloyd McClendon and third base coach Dave Clark will be retained from last year’s crew. As expected, former Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio will be Detroit’s new pitching coach. Former Minnesota bench coach Joe Vavra will be the quality control coach. Former Tigers infielder Ramon Santiago will be the new first base coach. Steve Liddle will be the bench coach, and Rick Anderson will serve as bullpen coach. Both worked for new Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire when he managed the Twins.

Youth Hockey
Kids between the ages of four and nine who have not played hockey before can try the game for free tomorrow. The Calumet Hockey Association is hosting the session beginning at 9:00 at the Colosseum. While there is no charge, registration is required. To register, click here. The first 40 who sign up will receive a free USA Hockey jersey. A similar event for Ontonagon County kids will begin tomorrow at 4:00 at the Ontonagon Recreation Center.
