Calumet, LL-H Earn Volleyball District Crowns – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

Two Copper Island high schools are celebrating district volleyball championships.
• In Division Three, Calumet turned back a determined Hancock squad 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15). For the Copper Kings, Allie Bjorn had 9 kills, 14 digs, and two blocks. Maddie Torola had 11 kills, Jackie Kiilunen had 11 kills and 13 digs, Caitlyn Strom had six kills and one block, and Laina Kariniemi had 38 assists and four aces. Calumet will face Manistique in a regional semifinal Tuesday in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 5:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3. The Copper Kings are currently ranked seventh in Division Three the state in the Michigan High School Volleyball Coaches’ Association poll, and the Emeralds are rated ninth. Charlevoix and Roscommon will play in the other regional semifinal.
• In Division Four, Lake Linden-Hubbell outfought Baraga 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16). Maddie Buschell had 11 kills. Abi Codere had 10 kills and seven digs. Ashlyn Steves had 19 digs. Payton Goldsworthy had 23 assists. The Lakes will take on Forest Park in a regional semifinal Tuesday. The game is scheduled to be played at Ewen-Trout Creek. The Trojans are rated ninth in the state in Division Four in the Coaches’ Poll. Stephenson will be one of the teams in the other regional semifinal. Their opponent will be decided today, when Munising and Ishpeming play their district championship game.

Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts North Central in an Eight Player Division Two football regional final today at 1:30. The winner will face Marion in the semifinals next week.

In other playoff football games involving Upper Peninsula teams…
• In Eight Player Division One, Norway plays at Pickford today. The winner will meet Inland Lakes in the semifinals next week.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain defeated Ishpeming 40-16 last night to win their district title. The Mountaineers will play at Beal City next weekend.
• In Division Seven, Menominee hosts Charlevoix for a district title this afternoon. The winner will play McBain next weekend.
• In Division Six, Gladstone claimed a district title with a 28-14 win over Negaunee. The Braves will play at Kingsley next weekend.
• In Division Five, Kingsford plays at Ogemaw Heights today. The winner will take on Frankenmuth next weekend.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team finally netted its first win of the season last night, outscoring Augustana 6-4. Freshman Isaac Gordon led the Huskies with a hat trick. After allowing the Vikings four goals in the first period, goaltender Blake Pietila blanked them the rest of the way, and set a school record with his 59th win in net. Blais Richartz, Kash Rasmussen and Jack Works also scored for Tech. Rasmussen had two assists. Those teams meet again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern hockey team fell 4-2 at Saint Thomas last evening. Those teams meet again tonight.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team outlasted Wayne State 3-2 (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 15-11) last night. Meg Raabe had a career-best 32 kills. Tess Hayes had a season-high 57 assists. Amelia Albers recorded 22 digs. The Huskies host Saginaw Valley State today at 3:00.

The Northern volleyball team swept Saginaw Valley State 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14) last night, and host Wayne State today.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team welcomes Minot State today at 1:00.

The Northern football team plays at Saginaw Valley State today.

College Basketball

The NMU men’s basketball team opens its season this weekend in Texas at the Lubbock Tip-Off Classic. The Wildcats will face Southeastern Oklahoma State this afternoon, and Lubbock Christian tomorrow night.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will face Wisconsin-Stevens Point in an exhibition match today at Wisconsin Dells.

NHL

The Red Wings will host the Bruins tonight, with coverage at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons will entertain the Suns tomorrow afternoon.

NFL

The Lions have this weekend off.

The Packers host the Rams in a 1:00 game tomorrow.

The Bengals will welcome the Bills in the Sunday night game, with coverage on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers have officially declined to exercise their contract option with Miguel Cabrera for next season. Cabrera officially becomes a free agent, but still plans to retire.

Detroit also said goodbye to free agent pitchers Matthew Boyd and José Cisnero. Cisnero struggled last season. Boyd underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and will miss all of next season.

Former Tigers reliever Joe Jiménez has signed a three-year, $26 million deal with the Braves. Detroit traded Jiménez to Atlanta a year ago for two minor leaguers, including outfield prospect Justyn-Henry Malloy.

Brewers pitcher Wade Miley has declined his contract option with the club, and become a free agent.
