Calumet, MTU Hockey Earn Wins – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school hockey, Jake Anderson’s power play goal in overtime lifted Calumet to a 3-2 victory over Hancock in the first game of the Copper Island Classic Friday night. After a scoreless first period, the Copper Kings opened up a 2-0 lead with goals by Josh Larson and Rory Anderson midway through the second stanza. Alex Nordstrom put the Bulldogs on the board with a shorthanded goal late in the second period, and then tied the game with a power play tally early in the third. Ian Carroll made 28 saves for Calumet, and Dawson Kero stopped 20 shots for Hancock. Those teams continue the Classic tonight at 7:00 at the Colosseum.

MTU
The 19th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team skated past at Alaska-Fairbanks 4-1 Friday night. Alex Petan, Tyler Heinonen, Malcolm Gould and Joel L’Esperance scored for the Huskies, and Jamie Phillips made 14 saves to get the win. Tech plays at Fairbanks again tonight. The Tech women’s basketball team plays at Minnesota State this afternoon.

The Huskies men’s basketball team is at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, where they opened with an 85-71 victory over Southern Wesleyan Friday afternoon. Freshmen Bryan Heath led Tech with 22 points. Kyle Monroe added 18, and Kyle Stankowski contributed 16 off the bench. The Huskies will face the host team this evening.

The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team is also at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, where they lost to the host squad 72-63 Friday. The Wildcats will take on Southern Wesleyan this afternoon.

The NMU women’s team has this weekend off.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team fell to 15th-ranked Bowling Green 2-1 Friday night. Those teams play again tonight in Ohio.

Niklas Kronwall’s goal just 26 seconds into overtime gave the Detroit Red Wings a 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers Friday night. Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar and rookie Dylan Larkin each had a goal and an assist for the Wings, who have gone to overtime in five of their last six games. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves. The Wings will host the Carolina Panthers tomorrow afternoon.

The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold a seven-point halftime lead , and dropped a 103-87 decision at Oklahoma City Friday night. With Andre Drummond in foul trouble, the Thunder outscored Detroit 55-32 in the second half. Drummond was held to 15 points and seven rebounds. Marcus Morris led Detroit with 17 points. The Pistons visit the Brooklyn Nets tomorrow night.
