Calumet Rips Menominee, Advances to Football District Final – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school football tournament play…

In Division Six, Calumet advanced to the district final with a 29-14 victory over Menominee last night. After spotting the Maroons an early touchdown, the Copper Kings reeled off four straight scores to take control. Kip Kangas’ 27-yard touchdown run tied the game late in the first half. Early in the second half, quarterback Paul Sturos used a little sleight of hand to give Calumet the lead…

A short TD run by Kangas midway through the fourth quarter sealed the win. Menominee’s final score came in the closing minutes, after the game was out of reach. The Copper Kings will host Negaunee for the district title next weekend. The Miners eliminated Westwood 42-14 last night.

In Eight Player Division Two, Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at North Central today. Coach Brett Gervais and the Lakes are hoping to avenge a 34-22 loss to the high-powered Jets three weeks ago…

“They’re putting up 70 points on nearly every team, so there’s obviously a lot of talent there, a lot of speed. So, I think that if we can hang on to the football, and not turn the ball over, we give ourselves at least a chance.”

Lake Linden opened the playoffs with a 48-8 victory over Forest Park last week. The Jets cruised to a 74-6 win over Engadine. Pregame coverage of today’s contest begins at 1:40 on KBear 102.3. The winner will face Cedarville in the regional championship match next weekend. The Trojans eliminated Rapid River 28-20 last night.

In other Upper Peninsula football tournament action…
• In Division Three, Marquette plays at Mount Pleasant today.
• In Division Four, Sault Ste. Marie defeated Ludington 22-16 last night, and will play at Cadillac next week.
• In Division Five, Kingsford plays at Reed City this afternoon.
• In Division Eight, Iron Mountain crushed Gwinn 56-8. Because of COVID-19 cancellations, the Mountaineers hadn’t played since September 25th. It was just their second game of the season. West Iron County hosts Bark River-Harris in the other district semifinal this afternoon.
• In Eight-Player Division One, Newberry plays at Pickford this afternoon.

MLB

At least some members of Ron Gardenhire’s Detroit Tigers coaching staff will stay with the team. Yesterday, new manager A.J. Hinch began building his staff. Third base coach Ramón Santiago and quality control coach Josh Paul will be retained. Former University of Michigan pitching coach Chris Fetter will be Detroit’s new pitching coach. Juan Nieves will be promoted to the major league staff as the assistant pitching coach – he has been the pitching coach for the Toledo Mud Hens for the past two seasons.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have begun the NFL’s “intensive protocol,” after a staff member tested positive for COVID-19. Team practices and meetings are limited, locker room use is discouraged, and masks and shields are required. Detroit’s 1:00 game at Minnesota tomorrow is still on the schedule. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford remains on track to be cleared to return from the reserve/COVID-19 list in time to play. Detroit will be without receivers Kenny Golladay and Jamal Agnew, because of other injuries.

The Green Bay Packers have added linebacker Krys Barnes and quarterback Jordan Love to the reserve/COVID-19 list. That means they have either tested positive for the coronavirus, or have been in close contact with someone who is infected.

In the Sunday night contest, the Buccaneers host the Saints. In the Monday night game, the Patriots visit the Jets. Hear both broadcasts on 99.3 The Lift.
