Calumet Softball Season Ends – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In softball, Calumet’s season ended with a 3-2 loss to Negaunee the Division Three District tournament at Negaunee yesterday. The Miners took an early lead with two runs in the first inning, and added another in the fifth. The Copper Kings threatened in the sixth, when they scored on a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI single by Hannah Rautio, but they couldn’t close the gap.

In softball today, the Division Four District will wrap up at the Hancock Driving Park. L’Anse will meet Hancock at 10:30; Ishpeming will take on Baraga at noon; and the championship game will begin at 1:30. All three games will be broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In baseball today, the Division Four District will be decided at the Hancock Driving Park. Jeffers will meet L’Anse at 1:00, Hancock will face the Gogebic Miners at 3:00, and the winners will play for the title at 5:00. We’ll broadcast the title game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

Tomorrow, the Division Three District at Negaunee will conclude. Negaunee will face Iron Mountain at 10:00; Calumet will take on Gladstone at noon. We’ll broadcast that game on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com, and also bring you the district championship game at 2:00, if Calumet advances.

In golf yesterday, Hancock’s Payton Dube finished second individually in the girls U.P. Division Two championship. In the girls Division Three championship, Ontonagon placed third in the team competition. Chassell’s Marli Hietala finished fourth individually. Full results are here. In the Boys Division Three meet, Ontonagon finished fourth in the team standings, with Chassell fifth, and Dollar Bay seventh. Ontonagon’s Ed Polakowski was the top individual finisher, in fifth place. Full results are here.

In high school track, the UP Championships will held tomorrow at Kingsford.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and will host the Chicago White Sox tonight. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Derek Holland. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Anderson

Chase Anderson threw seven shutout innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the New York Mets 2-1 yesterday. Milwaukee scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. Jacob Barnes gave up a solo home run in the eighth. Corey Knebel earned his fourth save.

The Brewers return home to host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight. Jimmy Nelson will start against Clayton Kershaw.

NHL
The Stanley Cup playoffs continue tomorrow at Nashville. The Penguins lead the Predators two games to none.

NBA
In the opening game of the NBA championship series last night, the Warriors shut down the Cavaliers 113-91. Game two will be played Sunday in Oakland.

The man who built the legendary Detroit Pistons “Bad Boys” teams has died. Jack McCloskey was general manager of the Pistons from 1979 to 1992. Led by Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars, his teams won NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. McCloskey passed away yesterday at his home in Savannah, Georgia. He was 91.

Knight of Columbus Walleye Tourney
The 16th annual Knights of Columbus walleye tournament will be held tomorrow on Portage and Torch Lakes, and Lac la Belle. The tourney will pay out to five places, with a $1000 minimum first place prize, and trophies for first through third places. There will be $3000 in tagged fish, and an optional biggest fish contest.
