Calumet Softball Sweeps at L’Anse – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball yesterday, Calumet remained unbeaten by sweeping a doubleheader at L’Anse. In the first game, the Purple Hornets scored a run in the opening inning. The Copper Kings responded with two in the third inning, and held on for a 2-1 victory. Calumet scored 10 runs in the opening frame of the second game, and cruised to a 14-2 five-inning win.

On the softball schedule today, Houghton plays at Hancock.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team has added a new recruit. Briana Portice played for Pickford High School.

MTU
Jake Lucchini has been named the Most Valuable Player on this year’s Michigan Tech hockey team. Lucchini was the team’s leading scorer. Mitch Reinke was named the team’s top defensive player. Dylan Steman won the John MacInnes Slide Rule Award for Scholastic Achievement for the third straight season. Brent Baltus collected the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award. Hancock’s Devin Kero took home the George McCarthy Performance Award for Scholastic and Athletic Achievement. Seamus Donohue was named the top freshman, and Cooper Watson was honored as the most improved player.

MLB
Matthew Boyd turned in six strong innings, as the Detroit Tigers edged the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 last night. Boyd earned his first win of the season. Shane Greene got the save. Nicholas Castellanos doubled home a run in the third inning for Detroit, and Leonys Martin doubled home the game-winner in the fifth.

The Tigers host the Tampa Bay Rays again this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will pitch against Blake Snell. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 last night. Both teams scored three runs in the first inning. Milwaukee’s came on back-to-back home runs by Travis Shaw and Jesús Aguilar. Ryan Braun added a two-run double in the fifth inning. Jonathan Villar tripled home a run in the sixth inning, and Hernán Pérez’ homer in the seventh provided the winning margin. Chase Anderson pitched into the sixth to get the win.

The Brewers wrap up that series at Cincinnati this evening. Wade Miley will make his first start of the season for Milwaukee. Luis Castillo will counter for the Reds.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
– Washington edged Pittsburgh 4-3. The Capitals lead that series 2-1.
– Winnipeg outscored Nashville 7-4. The Jets lead that set 2-1.

Tonight…
– Tampa Bay skates at Boston. That series is tied 1-1.
– Las Vegas plays at San Jose. The Golden Knights lead that series 2-1.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last evening…
– Cleveland edged Toronto 113-112 in overtime in the opening game of their second-round series.
– Golden State defeated New Orleans 121-116. The Warriors lead that series 2-0.

Tonight…
– Utah plays at Houston. The Rockets are up 1-0 in that series.
