Calumet Takes WestPAC VB Crown; Houghton Girls, DB-TC Boys Win UP XC Titles – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet High School has won the WestPAC volleyball title.

At Saturday’s tournament finals in Calumet, the undefeated Copper Kings dispatched Gwinn 2-0 (25-10, 25-13), and then defeated Houghton 2-0 (25-20, 25-14). The Gremlins took second place, by defeating the Modeltowners 2-1 (23-25, 25-15, 15-11) in the day’s opening match.

Because of the disparity in schedules caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, officials had decided that the tournament would be the sole determinant for this year’s league title.

The Houghton girls and the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys brought home U.P. Cross Country titles Saturday.

At Presque Isle Park in Marquette, the Gremlins squeezed past Marquette by two standings points to claim the Division One crown. Paige Sleeman was first overall, five second better than Westwood’s Heidi Meglathery. Houghton’s Ingrid Seagren took third overall, and Autumn Eles was ninth.

The Houghton boys team came in third, with Eric Weiss placing second individually.

At the Division Two meet in Iron River, the Hancock girls finished just one standings point behind St. Ignace. Maylie Kilpela was third individually, with Sierrah Driscoll fifth, and Adia Keranen eighth.

The Jeffers boys finished second to a dominant Ishpeming team. The Hematites claimed five of the top six individual finishes. Tavin Larson of the Jets was fourth, with Evan Pietila seventh, and Travis Asiala ninth.

At the Division Three competition in Pictured Rocks Golf Course, Chassell came in second to Munising. Kamryn Sohlden took sixth place individually, with Ayla Miller eighth , and Gwen Kangas ninth. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City claimed fifth place. Elise Besonen from Ewen-Trout Creek claimed third place, but Ewen did not have enough runners to qualify for team honors.

The Blue Bolt boys easily outpaced Rudyard to win the title. Individually, Davin Hill finished fifth, Cooper Stout eighth, and John Paul Norland 10th. Kolson Kytta from Chassell claimed second place, but the Panthers did not have enough runners to qualify in the team competition.

High school football playoff pairings will be released today. The traditional FOX Sports Detroit television show unveiling the matchups will not take place. All 11-player teams will make this year’s expanded field. 32 teams out of the 42 in each eight-player division will be included, based on playoff point totals accumulated during the regular season.

Bret Phillips’ single in the bottom of the ninth drove in the winning runs, as the Rays edged the Dodgers 8-7 in game four of the World Serie last night. Phillips’ shot scored Kevin Kiermaier cleanly from second base. After the ball bounced off the glove of center fielder Chris Taylor, Randy Arozarena tried to score from first base, but fell down rounding third base. About to catch him in a rundown after a good relay through, L-A catcher Will Smith let the ball slip out of his glove, and Arozarena slid home safely with the winning run.

Game five will be played tonight.

Brewers rookie Devin Williams has won the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year Award.
