MTU Men’s Hoops Swamps Finlandia

Tech pulled out to a 12-point lead at halftime, and held Finlandia to just 22 points in the second half.  Jason Hawke had 27 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies. Brandon Robinson scored 17 for the Lions.

The Michigan Tech football team closes its season Saturday at home against Lake Erie. The Huskies need a win to keep their post-season playoff hopes alive. Temps are projected to be in the mid-20s, with a chance of snow showers.

Tigers Sign Martinez
The Detroit Tigers have reportedly signed designated hitter Victor Martinez to a four-year contract. The deal is said to be worth 68-million dollars. The team has not confirmed the signing, pending a physical. Martinez will be 40 when the contract expires. He hit .335 last season, and just missed winning the American League batting title.

The Tigers also made a trade yesterday… sending minor-league second baseman Devon Travis to the Blue Jays for centerfielder Anthony Gose. Gose is 24. He has two minor-league seasons in which he’s stolen at least 70 bases, and is considered a good defensive player. In 94 games for the Jays last season, he batted just .226. He’ll compete for the Tigers’ starting job next spring. Travis was just named Detroit’s top prospect by Baseball America.

Our high school hockey coverage begins Tuesday night, when Houghton skates at Negaunee. Hear the Copper Country’s most complete hockey and basketball coverage this winter on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
