Calumet in Volleyball Semi Today – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team will face Bronson in the state tournament semifinals today. Bronson is the two-time defending state champion, and defeated the Copper Kings in last year’s semifinal. The match begins at 2:00 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Wixom St. Mary faces Laingsburg in the other Class C semifinal. The winners will play for the title tomorrow at noon.

In high school football, Forest Park will play Portland St. Patrick for the Division Two eight-player title tomorrow at 2:00 at the Superior Dome. West Iron County meets Saginaw Nouvel in the Division Eight semifinals tonight at 7:00 at the Superior Dome. Escanaba faces Grand Rapids Catholic Central tomorrow at Traverse City in the Division Four semifinals.

The local high school hockey season opens tonight, when Jeffers entertains Cheboygan.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team skates at Wisconsin-River Falls tonight, and Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow night. The women’s team visits Lake Forest College tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team is in Holland, Michigan, for the Hope College Tip-off Tournament. The Lions will face Rose Hulman this evening, and either Hope or Heidelberg University tomorrow. The Lions men’s basketball team hosts Millikin University tomorrow afternoon. MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team knocked off 19th-ranked Minnesota-Moorhead 66-53 last night. The Huskies led by five at halftime, and increased the margin with a strong third quarter. Lindsay Winter had 20 points and nine rebounds. The Huskies play at Minnesota-Crookston tonight. NMU’s women’s team plays at Crookston tomorrow.

The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team is at the Microtel Classic in Moorhead, Minnesota this weekend. The Huskies will face Southwest Minnesota State tonight, and Minnesota-Moorhead tomorrow. The Northern Michigan University men’s team is also at that event.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team faces Northern Michigan University in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tomorrow. The match will start at 5:30 at Ferris State University in Big Rapids. Wayne State and Ferris State play in the other semifinal.

The MTU hockey team skates at Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night. The NMU hockey squad is at Alaska-Fairbanks tonight and tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings welcome the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift. The Wings will play the next 10 games without Luke Witkowski. Witkowski received a 10-minute misconduct penalty and a major penalty for his part in the brawl between the Wings and the Calgary Flames Wednesday night. The 10-game penalty comes because he returned to the ice to continue the battle.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Indiana Pacers tonight.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Pittsburgh Steelers pounded the Tennessee Titans 40-17.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears, and the Green Bay Packers host the Baltimore Ravens. Both games kick off at 1:00.
