Calumet Wins Copper Island Opener – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, Calumet blanked Hancock 3-0 in the opening game of the Copper Island Classic Friday night. The Copper Kings got off to a quick start, when Paul Sturos and Tanner Rowe scored in the first period. Gabe Coppo added an insurance tally late in the second period. Alex Studebaker made 22 saves. Game two of the total-goals classic will be played tonight at the Colosseum. 

The Kiwanis girls 19U hockey team is holding a can drive today and tomorrow. Bring your deer camp empties to Louie’s in Lake Linden, Pat’s Foods in Calumet or Econo Foods in Houghton. Trailers or trucks will be available at each location. 

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The University of Alaska scored three goals in the third period, and edged the Michigan Tech hockey team 4-3 last night. After a scoreless first period, Trenton Bliss and Chris Lipe each scored in the first 65 seconds of the second frame to give the Huskies the lead. The Nanooks tied it up, but Keegan Ford’s goal in the third period put Tech ahead again, but the Huskies couldn’t hold the advantage. Matt Jurusik made 24 saves. Those teams play again tonight in Fairbanks.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost 4-2 at Alabama-Huntsville last evening. Those teams skate again tonight.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both the MTU and NMU men’s basketball teams are also in Alaska, for the Seawolves Thanksgiving Classic. The Huskies used a strong second half to edge host Alaska-Anchorage 83-80 last night. Kyle Monroe led the attack with 26 points. The Wildcats pasted Alaska 95-45. The Michigan teams will switch Alaskan opponents tonight.

The Tech women’s basketball team has the weekend off. 

The NMU women’s team is at the Drury University Thanksgiving Tournament. They lost to Truman State University 67-52 last night, and will play Drury today.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team fell 74-56 to the host Eagles at the Wisconsin-LaCrosse Thanksgiving Classic yesterday. Baily Froberg led the Lions with 21 points. FinnU will play Wisconsin-River Falls this afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team earned its first win of the season, defeating Northland College 2-1 last night in Ashland. Tyler Watungwa scored in the first period. Hunter Moreland netted the game-winner in the second. Ben Kelsch stopped 35 shots. The Lions will host the Lumberjacks tonight at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena. UPDATE – TONIGHT’S GAME HAS BEEN POSTPONED BECAUSE OF POOR ROAD CONDITIONS IN WISCONSIN. A MAKE-UP DATE WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings suffered another lopsided loss yesterday, falling 6-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers. Robby Fabri scored Detroit’s only goal. Calvin Pickard stopped 29 shots in net.

The Wings host the Washington Capitals tonight. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 110-107 to the Charlotte Hornets last night. Derrick Rose scored 23 for Detroit, and Andre Drummond grabbed 19 rebounds.

The Pistons host the San Antonio Spurs tomorrow.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers visit the New York Giants for a 1:00 game tomorrow.
