Calumet Wins Gibson Cup – Monday Sports Wrap

Gibson Cup

The Calumet Wolverines retained possession of the Gibson Cup, after a 6-5 victory in game three of the tournament last night. Jimmy Brey scored twice in the first period to give Calumet the early advantage. Goals by Austin Sturos and Cody Sivonen tied the game in the second frame. Rory Anderson put the Wolverines back on top 3-2 heading into the third period. Six goals in the final stanza made for a wild finish. Sturos’ second score of the night tied the game briefly, but Eric Bausano gave Calumet the lead for good, and Brey’s third tally proved to be the game-winner. Portage Lake won game one of the series 5-4 in overtime Friday night. Calumet forced the third game with a 6-1 victory on Saturday.

The Detroit Tigers completed a sweep of their series against the Kansas City Royals with a 3-1 victory yesterday. Christin Stewart drove home two runs with a triple and single. Tyson Ross gave up a run in the first inning, then pitched through the seventh to earn the first win by a Detroit starter this season. Shane Greene got his seventh save – he has reached that level faster than any player in major league history.

The Tigers have today off, and welcome the Cleveland Indians tomorrow. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Corey Kluber. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Reliever Drew VerHagen joined the Tigers yesterday. He was brought off the injury list after one rehab start with Detroit’s Lakeland farm team to replace Mike Moore on the roster. No decision has yet been made on how to treat Moore’s injured knee – surgery, or rehab.

Josh Hader earned an eight-out save, as the Milwaukee Brewers got past the Chicago Cubs 4-2 yesterday. Zach Davies pitched into the sixth, gave up both Chicago runs, and got the win. Christian Yelich homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers open an interleague series against the Angels in Los Angeles tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against Trevor Cahill.

The Brewers have sent reliever Taylor Williams down to the San Antonio Missions, and called up pitcher Jake Petricka.

With their season over, the Detroit Red Wings have sent eight players down to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Christoffer Ehn, Matt Puempel, Dominic Turgeon, Jake Chelios, Joe Hicketts, Filip Hronek and Dylan McIlrath will try to help the Griffins lock up a playoff berth this week, and will stay with the team through the Calder Cup tournament.

The slumping Detroit Pistons lost 104-91 to the Charlotte Hornets yesterday afternoon. Favoring his sore knee, Blake Griffin scored just 16 points for Detroit. Ish Smith led the team with 20. The loss means that Detroit will not get the sixth playoff position in the NBA Eastern Conference. With two regular-season games remaining, they remain in contention for the seventh and eighth seeds.

The Pistons host the Memphis Grizzlies tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia University baseball team lost both of its games against Wisconsin-Stout yesterday by identical 11-1 scores.
