Calumet Wins VB Tourney Opener – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
The volleyball district tournament opened last night…
– In Class B, Kingsford defeated Escanaba 3-1. The Flivvers will take on Houghton tomorrow.
– In Class C, Calumet swept Chassell 3-0. The Copper Kings will face Hancock at Hancock tomorrow at 6:00. L’Anse and Ironwood will play in the other district semifinal tomorrow at 6:00 at L’Anse.
– In Class D at Lake Linden-Hubbell tonight, Ontonagon will meet Baraga at 6:00, and Dollar Bay will play the Lakes at 7:30.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team entertains Northern Michigan tonight at 6:30 at the SDC.

The Tech soccer team opens the GLIAC tournament at home against Ferris State this afternoon at 2:00. For the second time this season, Michigan Tech goalie Kirsen Hudak has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Hudak earned her ninth shutout of the season as the Huskies played Northern Michigan to a 0-0 draw on Friday.

Michigan Tech freshman hockey goaltender Angus Redmond has been named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week . Redmond stopped 48 of 49 shots as the Huskies swept Northern Michigan last weekend.

Tidwell

Travis Tidwell from the Michigan Tech football team has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. The freshman defensive back had two interceptions, along with six tackles – five of them solo – in Tech’s upset win over Ashland.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team plays at the College of St. Scholastica tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Philadelphia tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Pistons host the New York Knicks tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

MLB
The Cleveland Indians will try to wrap up the World Series tonight at home against the Chicago Cubs. The Indians lead the Fall Classic three games to two.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, rookie Jordan Howard ran for 153 yards and a touchdown, as the Chicago Bears stunned the Minnesota Vikings 20-10. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least 10 games correctly to be eligible to be our weekly winner.

The Packers have released running back Knile Davis. They obtained Davis in a trade with the Chiefs just two weeks ago. NFL Networks is reporting that conditions of the trade were not met, so Green Bay will not need to give up anything to Kansas City.

Our high school football playoff coverage continues this weekend as two local teams fight for district titles. Calumet plays at Negaunee Friday night. Lake Linden-Hubbell entertain Norway Saturday afternoon. Hear both games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
