Canal Run Set for Tomorrow- Friday Sports Wrap

Little League League Baseball

The Portage Lake Little League Majors team opens play in the state tournament tomorrow afternoon at 12:45 against Edwardsburg. Pool competition will continue Sunday with a game against the host Grosse Pointe Farms team, and Monday against Taylor North. There are four pools of four teams each. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals beginning Tuesday. If you would like to support the team’s trip downstate, you can contribute through their GoFundMe page here.

NBA

The NBA championship series continues tomorrow night in Phoenix. The Suns and Bucks are tied at two wins per team.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers return from the All-Star break today. 

The Tigers will resume their season with a home day-night doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins. Coverage of the first game will start at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift. José Ureña will pitch against Charlie Barnes. Coverage of the second contest will start at 6:50.

The Brewers will host the Cincinnati Reds this evening.

Canal Run

The Hancock Canal Run returns this weekend, after having been basically shut down last summer because of COVID-19 concerns. On-site registration and bib pickup will take place this afternoon between 3:00 and 8:00 at Quincy Green. There will be no registration before the race tomorrow, although bibs can be picked up beginning at 5:45. Shuttle service from the Church of the Resurrection to the starting points of the various events will start at 5:45. The half marathon will begin at 7:00, followed by the 10-mile walk at 7:35, and the Bob Olson Memorial 10-mile run at 7:45. The five-mile walk starts at 8:00, the five-mile run at 9:00, and the two-mile fun run/walk at 10:00.

Some COVID-19 precautions remain in effect. Shuttle riders are being asked to wear masks while on the bus. No more than 100 participants will start a race at one time. There will be no formal awards presentation ceremony, and the Kids Dash will not be held this year. Link to full details here.
