Carpenter’s Blast Completes Tigers’ Comeback – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB

Kerry Carpenter’s three-run homer in the seventh inning lifted the Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the Royals last night. The two-out blast capped a five-run outburst that brought Detroit from behind, and rescued starter Reese Olson, who allowed four runs over six innings.

The Tigers host the Royals again tonight. Michael Lorenzen will pitch against Daniel Lynch. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers gave up six runs in the first inning, and lost to the Diamondbacks 9-1 last evening. Corbin Burnes hung in through five innings, was charged with seven runs, and took the loss. Milwaukee was held to just three hits.

The Brewers entertain the Diamondbacks again tonight. Colin Rea will pitch against Ryne Nelson.

• Koppers v Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics, then v Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s – no report.
• McGann’s/Northern Auto blanked Superior Lube 17-0, then defeated Downtowner Two 22-7.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
• Superior National Bank outscored JB’s 9-2. Rosalie Kangas got the win in the circle, striking out nine. Theresa Anderson had three hits for SNB, and Sadie Biekkola had two for JB’s.
• Superior Service defeated REL 10-4.
• Gold Standard pounded Tervo 20-5. Payten Goldsworthy had two singles, a double and a home run for Gold Standard, and Ryleigh Johnson had two hits.

• REL-Mohawk Technology faces Garnet Garage at the Houghton Field.
• Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker plays Houghton Building Supply-Stanton at the Stanton Field.

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
• Calumet One defeated Calumet Electronics 6-3.
• Eva’s Hideaway edged Bucko’s Party Store 5-4.
• Houghton Building Supply downed Ahmeek Fire Department 7-2.
• L and L got past Harter’s Party Store 5-4.
• Luigi’s Bar stopped Mohawk Superette 8-1.

Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

Former Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan University hockey coach Rick Comley is among those who will be added to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.

Comley played for the Lakers, then coached them to a CCHA title before moving to Northern. His Wildcats teams reached the Frozen Four three times, and won the 1991 NCAA championship. He later coached Michigan State, and led the Spartans to a Frozen Four appearance.

Others included in this year’s Hall of Fame class include longtime hockey announcer “Doc” Emrick, who started his career with the Port Huron Flags of the old IHL; Detroit Piston three-time all-star Richard Hamilton; “Mrs. Hockey,” Colleen Howe, the wife of hockey legend Gordie Howe; hockey goaltender Ryan Miller, who starred at Michigan State before an 18-year NHL career; and Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg.
