High School

The Houghton High School volleyball team at the Soo Invitational at Sault Ste. Marie Saturday – no report.

MLB

The Tigers held off the Guardians 4-3 Saturday. Kerry Carpenter’s three-run homer in the first inning was the big blow, but it was Javier Báez’ solo shot in the seventh that proved to be the game-winner. Matt Manning gave up two runs on five hits over six innings, and earned the win.

The Tigers play in Cleveland again today. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Logan Allen. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has designated struggling catcher Eric Haase for assignment. Haase was an offensive bright spot last season, but struggled at the plate this year. Haase will be replaced by Carson Kelly, whom the Tigers signed after he was waived by the Diamondbacks.

The Brewers pounded out 15 hits, and shut down the Rangers 6-1 Saturday. Freddy Peralta pitched into the sixth, and allowed a run on four hits, while striking out 11. Carlos Santana and Willy Adames homered.

The Brewers conclude that series at Texas this afternoon. Adrian Houser will start against Max Scherzer.

The Cubs won and the Reds lost Saturday, so Milwaukee leads both teams by three games in the National League Central Division.

First baseman Rowdy Tellez is back with the Brewers, after six weeks on the injured list. Infielder Abraham Toro has been sent to Nashville to make room.

Twilight League

The Twilight League playoffs will conclude today at the Houghton field. Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker will face top-seed Garnet Garage in the first semifinal at 11. Northern Driveline will play second-seed Houghton Building Supply-Stanton in the second semifinal at 1. The winners will meet at 3 in the championship game, which we will broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NFL

The Lions’ offense was moribund all afternoon, in a 25-7 preseason loss to the Jaguars. In his first action for Detroit, quarterback Teddy Bridgewater completed just five of 11 passes for 34 yards. Nate Sudfeld wasn’t much better, connecting on 9 of 18 passes for 80 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Lions’ running game was held to just 35 yards.

The Packers fell to the Patriots 21-17 in a game that was called off midway through the fourth quarter. That’s when Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden suffered a hit to the head from one of his teammates. Bolden was carried off the field on a backboard. Reports indicated that he had feeling in his extremities, but was being held in a hospital overnight for observation. Quarterback Jordan Love played briefly, completing five of eight passes for 84 yards and a touchdown. Emanuel Wilson rushed for 63 yards on 15 carries.
