The Detroit Tigers scored eight runs in the third inning, and held on to defeat the Seattle Mariners 9-4 last night. Nick Castellanos’ mammoth grand slam was the big blow of the inning. Jose Iglesias and Ian Kinsler added RBI doubles, as the Tigers sent 12 batters to the plate. Anibal Sanchez gave up two home runs to Nelson Cruz. He pitched into the seventh, and earned his 10th win of the season.

The Tigers conclude that home set against the Mariners this afternoon. David Price will start against Hisashi Iwakuma. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and lost to the Cleveland Indians 7-5 yesterday afternoon. Adam Lind homered as Milwaukee scored three times in the first inning. Cleveland bounced back with three runs in the third, and added single scores in the fifth, seventh and ninth to put the game away. Kyle Lohse struggled through five innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers begin a series at Arizona tonight. Mike Fiers will pitch against Zack Godley, who will make his major league debut.

– At Hurontown, Matt’s Auto Glass defeated Bucko’s/Labatts 29-16. Bucko’s then bounced back to beat Goal Post 24-9. Jordan Johnson homered in the second game.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto shut down Auto Value 18-1, and then cruised past Marley Bar 22-7.
– At Tapiola, Erickson Crowley Peterson downed Library/ThermoAnalytics 28-10. Keith Denomie hit three home runs, Erik Nettle had two, and Bobby Eliason hit one.

Pistons Sign Johnson
The Detroit Pistons signed first-round draft pick Stanley Johnson to a rookie contract yesterday. Terms were not revealed, but Johnson is slotted to earn about $2.58 million this season under the NBA’s salary cap.

MTU Alumni Run Deadline Tomorrow
The MTU Keweenaw Alumni and Friends Chapter will hold a 5K run/walk on Saturday, August 8th, at the Tech Trails. The cost is $15.00 for participants with a Tech Trail pass, and $20.00 for those without a pass. Money raised will benefit the chapter’s scholarship fund, which helps local students attend MTU.
